Assassin’s Creed: Revelations serves multiple roles within the franchise, Ubisoft has revealed: to celebrate and conclude Ezio’s storyline; to clear up confusion ahead of Assassin’s Creed 3; and to flesh out series protagonist Desmond.
Lead game designer Alexandre Breault told CVG that Revelations is about “following up and concluding Ezio’s storyline”. Ezio has many of the same question as players do.
“He wants to learn more about the origins of the Assassins, about Altair; he has all these questions, he wants to know why he did [what he did in previous games]. We really felt that we needed to conclude it in an appropriate way.”
Breault hinted that Ezio is an “important character within the series”, although it’s not clear if he’s referring to the Assassin’s Creed 2 and Brotherhood star’s popularity or the long-term effects of his actions on the storyline of the series.
Revelations will also tidy up loose ends for those players still confused about how the Ezio trilogy fits in. Breault said Ubisoft intended “to create a bridge that makes sure that it’s clear what is the link between [Ezio’s story and] Assassin’s Creed 1 and Altair.
“It was really our focus within the game to make that conclusion, to really sum up everything that happened before and make it clear”.
Something many fans suspicious of Lost-syndrome will be pleased to hear, no doubt.
Finally, Revelations will give us a better look at the franchise’s primary, oft-forgotten protagonist – the near-future assassin, Desmond.
“We have all-new gameplay with Desmond and the interesting aspect is we’ll really be able to see more of the background of Desmond throughout the game,” Breault confirmed.
“So we will reveal a lot about his character and build up what Desmond is, what his purpose is within the game.”
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations is due on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in November, with a PC and possibly Wii U version to follow.
