SOE: Planetside 2 originally F2P update for original game

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has said that Planetside 2 had previously been just an update for the original game to go free-to-play.

The update would have also included a major graphical enhancement, but the development team got so excited by it, according to Smedley, that it decided to go on to become its own game.

After the call was made, SOE made a new engine from the bottom up internally to support the game.

Smedley's comments were made at the SOE Fan Faire event in Las Vegas last week, where Planetside 2 was announced.
