id worked on “entirely different project” before RAGE

id design director Matt Hooper has said that the Texas developer was working on something else before beginning development on RAGE.

The studio only moved to the apocalyptic shooter after realising the “opportunity” it had in making it.

“We actually started on an entirely different project and we kinda switched gears when we realised we had an opportunity here,” Hooper told GameSpot AU.

“Brand new technology, brand new IP with RAGE. Really, it’s an excuse to do all these cool things we’ve always wanted to do that maybe didn’t fit in DOOM, Quake or some of our other franchise worlds.”

Hooper also seemed to indicate that there could be unlocks in the main game via the iOS versions.

“We’ve been tinkering around with the idea of doing things with the iOS titles and then RAGE and the fact we can do things very close to the full fidelity of the game on those little devices,” he said.

“We talk about different ideas of something in the iOS version unlocking something in the main game. We haven’t finalised any of that yet, but it’s something we’re considering.”

Hooper told VG247 at Bethesda’s pre-E3 event in Utah that there would be a second iOS title before the main title’s October launch. The first title, Mutant Bash TV, released last year.

RAGE releases on October 7 in the UK for PS3, 360 and PC.
