Wright: Gaming culture is a platform

Famed creator Will Wright has said that the spread of gaming beyond established platforms is good for the industry, despite proving "disruptive" to traditional publishers.

"Of course it's incredibly disruptive to the established companies," the SimCity designer said, speaking at the Inventing the Future of Games symposium in Santa Cruz, as reported by Gamasutra.

"But to me, it's the most healthy thing that could be happening to our industry."

Wright said anything with a screen could turn into a gaming device, and called it the "Gambrian Explosion" - a little pun for evolution geeks.

"I think games are going to go everywhere - every topic, platform, group you can imagine," he predicted.

But game makers need to adjust their mindsets and stop treating platforms like "ghettoes".

"The culture we're selling a game into is a platform in and of itself," Wright claimed.

"The psychology and the demographics of the players is a platform."

Wright was rocketed to developer stardom with the success of SimCity, and later, The Sims and Spore.
