3DS won't utilise current version Nintendo Points

The Nintendo Points purchasing system in use on the DSi and Wii may not carry over to the 3DS, according to the Japanese 3DS information page.

As translated by Kotaku's, currently available prepaid Nintendo Points cards won't be compatible with the 3DS.

Not much point stocking up next time your local retailer has a fire sale, then.

Nintendo advises that "prepaid point cards that can be used with the 3DS will go on sale at a later date", suggesting it might be a matter of unique codes rather than a whole new currency.

The 3DS launches in Europe on March 25.
