Sky Sports has been warned by UK watchdog Ofcom over complaints that it showed “blatant” and irrelevant” EA Sports logos during a Premer League game last September.
The match in question, Everton vs Manchester United, seen the EA Sports logo 14 times throughout the game and in post-match analysis, MediaWeek reports.
Sky claimed that EA Sports was simply an “official technology partner”, where the branding would be allowed under such pretense. But Ofcom said that EA was not supplying any noted technology to BSkyB.
Although it isn’t affiliated in Sky in any way, the Premier League announced last year that EA Sports had become an official technology partner.
Because of that, Sky Sports was in breach of Rule 10.3 of the Broadcast Code. That rule dictates the promotion of services and products. But no more action will be taken against Sky.
The broadcaster, however, did say that “on this occasion, the application of the EA on-screen credit should have been subject to greater editorial judgement given the high-scoring nature of this particular game, which meant the credit was displayed on a higher than normal number of occasions.”
