Nintendo has made an official statement in response to the NPD’s release of US sales figures for 2010, highlighting its performance as the best selling console manufacturer of the last decade.

NoA’s Charlie Scibetta said that Nintendo had topped the charts for five years straight, adding, “Of the quarter billion hardware systems sold in the United States during the past 10 years, Nintendo sold more than half.”

Lifetime sales of Wii consoles has reached 34 million, while the DS in its many and varied forms has beaten out the PS2 as best selling console in many territories, with 47 million sales to its name.

In December of 2010, Nintendo shifted 2.5 million DS consoles and 2.3 million Wiis. Three Wii exclusives made it into the top three best selling games for the month – Just Dance 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Disney Epic Mickey.

Three Wii-only titles placed in the 2010 top ten, too, namely Just Dance 2 (again), Wii Fit Plus, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
