Nintendo DS has come out as the big hardware numbers in March during results released by NPD tonight

The handheld sold over 700k, although it's unknown how many of those relate to DSi XL, which released at the end of the month.

Wii came second with sales of 557.5k, while Xbox 360 came third with 338.4k. PlayStation 3 sold just under 314k, while PSP beat PS2 with 119.9k to its 118.3k respectively.

All in all, Nintendo systems accounted for 59 percent of all hardware sold in March, prompting NOA's Cammie Dunaway to say:

“Demand for Nintendo fun continues unabated. We’re glad so many people are able to get their hands on our systems as we prepare for the May launches of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii and Picross 3D for our Nintendo DS systems.”
