Nintendo has sold 30 million DS units since its release in Japan over five years ago, according to a report from Famitsu.

The console launched in the country on December 2, 2004. It soon launched here on March 11, 2005.

The best-selling software for DS in the region, according to the report, is New Super Mario. Bros, which has sold 5.767,262 million units since its release.

Second and third went to Pokemon Diamond Pearl and Animal Crossing: Wild World, with both games selling 5,766,571 and 5,133,862 units respectively.

Nintendo announced this morning, in a very out-of-character move, a new DS iteration known as Nintendo 3DS: the first time it's announced new hardware outside of a press conference.

It's set to launch before March 2011.
