Avalanche CEO says Avatar “should not have been made into a game”

Avalanche Studios CEO Christofer Sundberg has said that more publishers should cancel games that don’t drip with quality, and used the Avatar game based on the movie as an example.

Speaking with Develop, Sundberg believes that publishers should have the courage to cancel certain games before too much money and time are put into them, which can result in a sub-par game being released followed by a loss of reputation.

"I still believe publishers should cancel more projects in case the developers fail to deliver quality, before the investments become too high," he said.

"A better due diligence process for developers is needed, as is a higher demand for quality, along with a courage to invest more money in fewer projects, rather than spreading the budget over many ‘OK’ projects.

"Avatar is a great example of a game that should never have come out, regardless of how much money it made. I don’t know if it was profitable or not, but games like that give license-based games a bad reputation, and that reputation is already at an all-time low, and you’re shooting yourself in the foot".

During the same interview, Sundberg chatted a bit about the next game the devs have in development, without going into specifics.

Avalanche's Just Cause 2 is out March 26 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, with a demo hitting next week.
