BioWare: Mass Effect 2 saves might not work with Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect series project director Casey Hudson has revealed that your Mass Effect 2 save may not work in Mass Effect 3.

More below, but be warned: there might be some spoilerfics.

If you finish the second game with Shepard trading in life for victory, you're going to have to start afresh in the third game.

"Dead is dead. Mass Effect 3, as with the rest of the trilogy, is Shepard’s story. If you have a dead Shepard at the end of Mass Effect 2, that saved game won’t import into Mass Effect 3," he said.

"You can play Mass Effect 3 if you died in Mass Effect 2 of course, but you’ll have to create a new Shepard. Harsh? Yes. But we wouldn’t be serious about the concept of a suicide mission if you couldn’t die and your death didn’t have serious consequences."

Mass Effect 2 was released at the end of January to critical acclaim, with over 2 million units sold in the first couple of days on sale in the US and a number one position in the UK for two weeks running.

Mass Effect 3 is currently in pre-development, and will be released in this hardware cycles, according to comments made by Hudson previously.
