BAFTA has confirmed to GI.biz that its 2009 Games Awards will be broadcast live via the internet for the first time.

The ceremony will be broadcast through both the BAFTA and GAME websites when it takes place on March 19.

"In a first for a BAFTA Awards ceremony, this year's GAME British Academy Video Games Awards will be streamed live, broadcasting on both the BAFTA and GAME websites on Friday, March 19," said BAFTA's head of videogames, Kelly Smith.

"The decision to stream the Awards was made by the BAFTA Video Games Committee with the aim of reaching the maximum audience of videogame fans and therefore further promoting the creative work of the industry as widely as possible. More details about the Awards will be announced shortly."

Panels determining the winners will be held later this month.

Last year, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare took home three awards: one for Best Action and Adventure Game, one for Gameplay and the third for Story and Character.
