Sony has told Engadget that it is currently investigating the possibility of existing PS3 games being playable in 3D after a software update next year.

Currently “conducting a technological investigation” into the possibility, Sony maintains that there are “no plans for the market launch of this [3D backwards compatibility] at this time.”

According to reports, PS3 is going 3D in 2010, but for titles currently available, Sony is keeping quiet.

3D games on the horizon that are slated for PS3 include Avatar: The Game and some Sony racing titles.
