April NPD: US market hits $1.23 billion, up 47%

Huge sales of GTA IV and Mario Kart drove the US games industry up to a value of $1.23 billion in April, it was shown in last night's NPD figures, up 47 percent on the previous month.

Sales to date this year now stand at $5.47 billion, up 31 percent on the first four months of 2007.

Hardware sales in April grew 26 percent to $426.2 million while software sales exploded, jumping 68 percent to $654.7 million. Accessories sales also grew 39 percent to $154 million.
