SCEE: PSP Minis to likely “transition to UMD” and possibly PS3

SCEE’s Zeno Colaco has stated that some PSP Minis are to be transitioned to UMD or on PS3 in order for developers and publishers to access revenue from retail as well as the PS Store.
“The most successful Minis titles will probably transition to UMD,” Colaco told Develop. “I think that a package of multiple Minis games on a single UMD is a real possibility at a later stage, where even a studio or publisher will put a collection of their own games on a single disc. We’d be open to that.”
“These games won’t need to necessarily be built for the home console, and I think these games will find their true life and identity in those micro-bursts of play. But I do think there’s a possibility that Minis could find themselves on other consoles down the line.”
Minis go live on the PS Store October 1.

Sony’s PSP strategy includes new content with cheaper, smaller downloadable games

Sony has said that it’s planning to start wooing developers for digitally distributed games on PSP by doing away with concept approval and releasing less expensive developer kits and low price points for new titles.
“We’re introducing new initiatives for the PSP which take it beyond traditional gaming, but still includes elements from gaming, and also includes new developers,” SCEE’s head of developer relations Zeno Colaco told Develop at E3.
So far, over 50 studios around the world are making new kinds of games and applications and creations will be offered through a separate area of the PlayStation Store open to the PSP and PSPgo.
Emerging markets, including India’s Gameshastra and Creat have also signed on but the development will not be reminiscent of Apple’s SDK with iPhone, because Sony’s SDK will not be made available publicly.
“It is still a professional environment, you still need a development kit and you still need to have investment and a team,” he stated. “But it can be a small team. We don’t see any of the restrictions on the disc-based space being in this space.”

Sony: Digital distribution will “ignite” PSP development
SCEE developer and publisher relations boss Zeno Colaço has told Pocket Gamer that digital distribution on PSP is help swell the amount of games available for the system.
“I have to be careful what I say but publishers are definitely exploring more opportunities in terms of the types of games they can release on PSP, even in terms of more female-oriented games, puzzlers and less hardcore games,” he said. “The opportunity we’re providing with digital distribution will ignite those thoughts.”

PSP will last for 10 years, says Sony
Speaking to PocketGamer, Sony’s Zeno Colaço has confirmed that the firm is planning on having PSP around for a very long time yet.
“We definitely have the ambition for it to feature very strongly in the future, both on its own and also complimentary to PlayStation Network environment and the PS3,” he said. “But we’ll have to wait a while before we can fully reveal the direction we’re going in. Ten years is certainly the long-term plan though.”
At one game a year, that’ll be another ten games released. Right, kids?
