Nintendo’s up first today after Microsoft’s E3 showing last night, with Sony to follow soon afterwards. But undoubtedly, this is the most important conference in this year’s show, as well as one of the most important within the past five years.
How so? Two very specific reasons.

New Zelda game will “improve upon” Twilight Princess, says Aonuma

Eiji Aonuma has told IGN that while Twilight Princess didn’t live up to the public’s expectations and its potential, the next iteration of the series on Wii will, thanks to what the team learned through creating the game.
“With Twilight, we challenged ourselves to create the most vast and realistic world the series had ever seen,” said Aonum, “but we don’t feel we were able to fully complete this objective. With that as a starting point for our improvements to the series in the future, we are of course working on a new game for Wii.
“For any game to be remembered for a long time, just like Ocarina of Time was, the game must give the strong impression that it has set a new starting point for future sequels to build upon. We are working to further improve upon the experiences found in Twilight Princess so that our future games can realize these innovations.”
We’re keeping our fingers crossed.

Link may fly in new Zelda for Wii

Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma hinted to the Guardian that our hero Link might fly around a bit in the new Zelda game for Wii.
“I have an eight-year-old son myself at home, and quite recently he started playing The Phantom Hourglass for DS, because when the software first hit the market he was too young,” he said.
“When he started playing with the boat, I told him: ‘In the next Zelda, you are going to be able to ride on the train.’ He answered: ‘OK, Dad, first boat, and then train? Surely next time, Link is going to fly in the sky … ‘
“I just don’t know. If many people make many speculations … some of them might be correct. Right now, I have to refrain from commenting on anything.”

Reggie says: “We haven’t committed to Zelda in 2010″

During his interview with GTTV, Reggie Fils-Aime was not very reassuring when it came to the next Zelda game for Wii.
As a matter of fact, we’re gonna have to wait a while, like we figured.
“We haven’t committed to Zelda in 2010″ he told Geoff Keighley.
OK then. Maybe in 2020 we’ll get it. No matter, as long as it’s properly good and well done.
We saw this bit yesterday during the GTTV bit, but figured you had heard enough from Reggie for the day.

Miyamoto: “We want to be as creative as possible for upcoming Wii Zelda”

Nintendo’s financial briefing has been all over the news, and in it, Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned during the Q&A portion that the next Zelda will have “gorgeous graphics”.
“On developing the recent Zelda for DS, I found out that one of Zelda’s core appeals is its uniqueness,” he said. “Of course we are preparing gorgeous graphics for the sake of users’ anticipation for a grand role-playing adventure [on Wii].
“But what I believe is very important is the realistic, actual feeling players have experienced themselves; the feeling to have really been on an adventure, to have explored the unknown terrains, to have solved the puzzle through trial and errors, to have themselves grown through various experiences!
“In that sense, a personal sense of creativity is becoming important among us. We have assembled one of the most creative team for the recent Zelda for DS, and we want to be as creative as possible for upcoming Wii Zelda.”
