XCOM developer 2K Marin will blow the doors off its shooter once again in a matter of days, the company has confirmed. The project was initially announced back in 2011 but was taken back to the drawing board for re-tooling. The studio confirmed that the game has “undergone an evolution” since we last saw it.

XCOM creator Julian Gollop has discussed the pitfalls of weak AI in games during a new interview. The developer has voiced concern that visuals are becoming the main focus of games, rather than intelligent enemies or NPCs, creating what he called an “elaborate paper-thin illusion”, of a believable world.

2K has been really quiet regarding XCOM of late, until it recently went so far as to remove official videos from its YouTube channel and taking the website offline. Last month, a report from Superannuation stated that the game may be in the process of a re-brand due to domain registrations for “thebureau-game.com” and “whathappenedin62.com” popping up – so the culled assets and information seemed to indicate this. Today, Videogamer posted a video of XCOM related contents it received in the mail, proving – hopefully- that it is indeed a re-brand and not an all out cancellation. Watch for yourself below. Internet wizard Superannuation today made a new post, and the highlight, probably, involves the shooter version of XCOM that has been in development at 2K Marin for a while now. We haven’t seen any updates on that title in a long time, and Superannuation’s data suggests it might be because they’re dropping the XCOM brand from the game.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown lead designer Jake Solomon has said to expect more DLC for the game this year, as Slingshot and Second Wave are just the start. “We do have more content coming in 2013,” he told Polygon. “We’re working on something really awesome.” A release window wasn’t provided, as Solomon said it will take the team “some time” to complete the work. Solomon did say, though, that the next DLC wouldn’t have the “limited scope” of the Slingshot DLC.

Walmart has revealed its Black Friday gaming deals, and according to the mega retail chain’s ad, it will have over 30 games on sale for $15. It also notes that over 25 other titles will be on sale for $10, while another 40-plus can be yours for $25. The later sale includes such titles as Epic Mickey 2, Dishonored, FIFA 13, Just Dance 4, Madden 13, and XCOM. The Xbox 360 Skylanders Starter Kit will also be on sale for $149 and comes with a 4GB console. A PS3 bundle complete with an inFamous Pack and the Uncharted bundle will run you $199. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be getting two pieces of single-player add-on content. In addition to these two add-on content packs, the Elite Soldier Pack, which was free to those who pre-ordered the game, is now available for purchase.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is out next week, and those who pre-ordered the game on Steam can now pre-load the game to save some time come launch. Those who pre-ordered through Green Man Gaming should check their inboxes for the key so they can start the pre-load process as well. The download size is approximately 12.3GB, according to Evil Avatar. XCOM: Enemy Unknown launches in North American on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 9 and in Europe on October 12. XCOM, the first-person shooter from 2K Marin – not to be confused with XCOM: Enemy Unknown by Firaxis – has been dark for a while, leading to rumours of the game being delayed. However, new screens have leaked suggesting the game has been reworked into a third-person strategic shooter instead. More details and screens below.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown was at PAX, and if you missed out on the panel conducted by Firaxis, it’s posted below. The video is titled: “A Thousand Stupid Ideas on the Road to Glory,” and in it the four leads discuss the development process and some of the ideas which didn’t make it into the game. A video showing the multiplayer mode in XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been unleashed on YouTube courtesy of Gamespot. In the video posted below, the site discusses the mode, point system, and balancing with lead designer Jake Solomon, and shows the various strategies players can use to defeat their enemies. Players will be able to craft their own squads using 10,000 points available at the start of each match. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will release for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 9 in North America, and on October 12 in Europe.

2K has said the Gunzerker and Siren classes in Borderlands 2 will be playable at its PAX East booth next week. Players will be able to run around the Pandora Park and Caustic Caverns maps shooting things. Sounds fun. Other 2K-published titles playable in the booth include: Spec Ops: The Line, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Civilization V: Gods and Kings.
