Microsoft explains 300′s disappearance from Live, licensing for Video Store
Robin Burrowes, Xbox Live marketing manager for the UK, has explained the disappearance of 300 from the Xbox Live Video Store in the UK, as well as giving us an idea of where it’s off to next.
“Indeed it has,” he said when we asked if the movie had actually vanished from the service, just in case our eyesight was giving out. “Basically, we get new films for a three month period, typically five months after theatrical release. Thereafter it goes to Sky, then terrestrial.”
The Video Store’s latest announcement was that Paramount movies are being added in the UK, including Transformers, 1408 and Goodbye Bafana.

UK Live movies “skewing towards HD”
According to this, uptake for high definition movies on the British Xbox Live Video Store is outweighing demand for standard definition content.
“We’re just two months into the life cycle from a UK point of view, and from indicators we’re already beginning to receive, firstly we’re performing above expectations, secondly we’re very much skewing towards HD content – which is something we thought would happen, but we’re actually surprised by the extent of it – and thirdly we’re very much veering towards the newer of the titles that we’ve had on board so far,” said Xbox Live marketing manager in the UK, Robin Burrowes.
Newer films such as Ocean’s 13 and 300 were more likely to be downloaded in HD, Burrowes said.
“We are offering the choice, certainly on new titles, of both HD and SD,” he said. “There tends to be more of a legacy issue with library titles because they were originally only ever made in standard definition.”
Burrowes didn’t offer any specific figures on the amount of films being downloaded from the service.
