Xbox 360 bundles are receiving a $50 price cut across America, but Microsoft has just confirmed that the UK will not be receiving a similar reduction. Bad times.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has agreed with EEDAR’s Jesse Divnich’s comments yesterday on this week’s 360 price cut not being a significant sales driver, saying that “a substitution of hard drives and box color at the same price point shouldn’t do much for sales”.

Pachter, however, has disagreed with Divnich on the matter of the 360 Elite coming down further to $249 from the new price of $299 within a year, predicting the machine will stay where it is unless sales start slipping.

“Microsoft is happy with its level of sales, and unless it sees sales down significantly year-over-year, they will probably stay at the $299 price point,” Pachter told VG247.

“It’s hard to say how much of a boost Sony gets (I think 50-60%), and whether this comes from overall increases in console sales or from taking share from the other guys. If Sony’s sales go up 100%, and Microsoft’s go down 20% or more, we may see a $50 price cut on the 360. That’s a lot of ifs.

“The only way I see 360 sales suffering is if Sony does a great job of advertising, and if Nintendo also cuts price.

“Since it’s too early to call either, I’d venture a guess that Microsoft will stay put at $299.”

Aaron Greenberg has told G4 that the timing on the Xbox 360 price is was completely coincidental.

“Typically these types of price changes are targeted to drive sales for the holiday season,” said Greenberg. “However it is difficult for our retail partners to make these types of changes in November or December so we try to work with them to make these types of adjustments before things get too hectic at retail.”

As far as Sony’s price cut is concerned, Greenberg seems pleased for the consumer even when adding in a well-placed dig.

“I guess as a gamer I am glad I got an earlier PS3 console before they pulled a lot of the functionality like backwards compatibility out,” he said. “At the end of the day lower priced hardware is good for everyone and good for the industry as a whole.”

Analyst firm EEDAR has said that despite price cuts for Xbox 360, no significant boost in sales can be expected for the console this year.

“Forecasting for the remainder of the year, EEDAR does not expect the Xbox 360 to see a significant sales lift over last year’s performance despite its price drop for the Xbox 360 Elite system,” noted Jesse Divnich, director of analyst service at the firm.

“In fact, the consistency of sales would indicate that the $299 price point is a sweet spot for the next-generation home consoles.”

Divnich also stated that he believes Microsoft will lower the price of the Elite $249 within a year’s time along with a $299 SKU bundled with Natal by 2011.

“Over the next year Microsoft will most likely reposition the Xbox 360 Elite model closer to the $249 price point to both pressure Sony and attract potential Nintendo Wii consumers.

“From a strategic standpoint this would then allow Microsoft to introduce the new Natal model in 2010/2011 at the $299 price point and still have an option for consumers cheaper than the Sony PlayStation 3.”

A trusted UK retailer has confirmed to VG247 that there is indeed a price cut coming to Xbox 360 and that the Pro is on the way out, starting this coming Friday, August 28.

The Elite-price will drop from £239.99 to £199.99 – the same as a Wii – with the Pro 60Gb being discontinued.

Our source says the Arcade will remain the “entry level hardware”, but the current console bundle with Sega Superstars Tennis will finish. The new Arcade SKU will launch at the suggested price of £159.99 without any software.

GameStation will be launching an Elite bundle at £199.99 with COD 4 Modern Warfare and Fight Night Round 4.

As for trade-ins, you can get an Elite for £99.99 if you put in a Wii or a 60Gb 360. Should you decide to trade-in a 160gb PS3, you’ll get the Elite for £19.99.

An announcement is expected to be made by Microsoft tomorrow, according to earlier reports.

A source close to Ars Technica says that PS3 and Xbox 360 will both get a price cut by fall.

Yes, more “price cut” talk.

The “mole” says that the 80Gb PS3 will become scarce, and thanks to the bundles being offered by Sony, this could happen within two moths time. The Slim will come out in the fall with the price drop and 160Gb models of PS3 will also become scarce — all part of Sony’s diabolical plan no doubt (insert evil laugh).

As far as Xbox 360 is concerned, Microsoft will phase out the Pro making Elite the standard. Another bundle is expected just in time for the holiday shopping extravaganza to replace the Elite, but the source failed to elaborate on what the SKU actually was.
