PETA protesting in WoW over in-game clubbing of baby seals

seal

This Saturday, April 11, World of Warcraft players may notice some in-game activists over in Northrend due to PETA staging a protest over clubbing baby fur seals in the Howling Fjord zone.

The group’s taken umbrage to bashing fake critters over the head, and the protesters plan on PvP-ing anyone that stands in between them and the virtual cuties.

There’s more after the break, but just so you know, originally PETA tried to get this part of the game banned.

Thanks, Kotaku.

Mt. Dew joins the World of Warcraft alliance, and horde too

mtdewwow

Mountain Dew’s Game Fuel is back, this time promoting World of Warcraft instead of Halo 3.

“Citrus Cherry” is being called “Horde Red” this time around, and a new berry flavor titled “Alliance Blue” is in the can as well.

More syrupy drinks loaded with caffeine to appeal to MMO players on an all-night grind. Like we really need a something more potent to eat us from the insides. Red Bull already does the job.

Look for these at Walmart and other stores sometime soon.

Thanks, D’toid.

World of Warcraft gets a small patch and an arena tournament

wowarenachallenge

Blizzard wants a few dedicated and skilled combatants to enter the new World of Warcraft Global Arena Tournament, where your team can both renown and cash prizes.

According to the official WoW site, players will “battle on special Tournament realms purely dedicated to the competitive format of 3v3 Arena matches”.

The characters fighting it out will be newly created level 80s, and the teams that qualify will battle in an invitational ladder to get a chance at the finals.

Registration and all the other details through this link.

While you are here though, read on through the jump a list of patch notes for the surprise patch that Blizzard released for WoW earlier this afternoon. No, it’s not the BIG one, sorry.

Following the usual maintenance today, patch 3.0.9 should be going live on all servers, but if you want to download the patch manually, click here.

Blizzard Invitational: The final link round-up

diabloiii6.jpg

It was the event that kept on giving. Not content with making what has to go down as the most exciting live reveal in videogames history in Diablo III, the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris this weekend continued to show tons of information on StarCraft II, WoW: Wrath of the Lich King and people getting their faces painted so they look like murlocs. It had it all. Hit this for all our coverage both live from the first day of the show and afterwards, and see below for everything that happened overnight.

Wrath of the Lich King shots leaked

WoWInsider’s posted some leaked screens of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. Looks pretty. We’re not hosting these because Blizzard has probably dispatched war rocket Ajax to bring back someone’s body, so we’re best off out of it. Take a look for yourself. The expansion’s out this year.

GDC: Micro-transactions don’t give level playing field, says WoW man

Speaking here, Blizzard’s Rob Pardo has said that WoW players want a fair financial system once they’re in the game and that micro-transactions would “betray” them.

“We chose to go with the subscription-based model instead of that approach,” he said. “We’ve taken the approach that we want players to feel like it’s a level playing field once they’re in WoW. Outside resources don’t play into it – no gold buying, etc. We take a hard line stance against it. What you get out of micro-transactions is kind of the same thing and I think our player base would feel betrayed by it. I think that’s something else you have to decide on up-front instead of implementing later.”

Blizzard is currently working towards the release of Wrath of the Lich King, the second major expansion to its 10-million strong MMO.
