Nintendo pulls plug on WiiWare demo “experiment,” now “deciding next steps”

Now you see them. Now you don’t. Like an expert magician, Nintendo waved its wand and – poof – WiiWare’s game demo service disappeared.
It’s a neat trick, yeah. But will the bite-sized freebies be reappearing any time soon?

Phoenix Wright landing on WiiWare in January

Looks like – for the time being – Phoenix Wright has flown the DS’ coop. Starting in January, three of his finger-pointing-est adventures are getting the thumbs up from Nintendo to appear on WiiWare.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attourney’s taking the stand in January, with Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations coming in March and May, respectively. They’re going for 1,000 Wii Points a piece.
“Rise from the Ashes,” a bonus case added to the DS version of Ace Attourney, will also drop in May, for a mere 100 Wii Points.
Be warned, though: these are ports of the quick and dirty variety. Same graphics, same sound effects – even a constrained 4:3 resolution! You can flail the Wii-Mote like a complete loon when you’re objecting, though, and that’s certainly worth the full price of admission in our books.
Check out a few screens over at Joystiq.

Nintendo weekly releases – Pop + Solo, Mr. Driller W, Super Empire Strikes Back

Own a Wii and/or DSi? Like downloading stuff? Well then, this one might be a little hard for you to choke down. See, while other weeks have given you a crop of four, five — maybe even six — sparkly new games to download, this week’s a barren wasteland with only three.
Oh, wait! Is that another game we just saw?
Nope. Just a tumbleweed. Our fragile hearts are shattered.
So, if you haven’t gone mad with grief and done something crazy like buy an Xbox or PS3, this week’s selection is composed of Pop + Solo, Mr. Driller W, and Super Empire Strikes back.
Full details on each game are after the break.

Meet the new Earthworm Jim, same as the old Earthworm Jim

Yesterday’s announcement that Gameloft had picked up the rights to give your Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii a case of the worms wasn’t exactly clear on what form said creepy-but-not-crawly would take. Would it be a new game, or would it be a port of a classic earthworm escapade? G4 asked Gameloft, and promptly received an answer.
“A Gameloft representative has confirmed to me it’s a remake of the 1994 original game released on Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis, not a new game,” reads G4′s post.
So that’s that.

Nintendo weekly releases – Revenge of Shinobi, Guitar Rock Tour, Family Slot Car Racing

As per usual, Nintendo has lit the fuse on another week with a new batch of downloadable games. We, of course, are telling you about them, thus making sure the natural order doesn’t fall into chaos.
This week brings PictureBook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit, Family Slot Car Racing, and Revenge of the Shinobi to the Wii, while Brain Age Express: Sudoku and Guitar Rock Tour round out the DSi’s lineup.
Ninjas, guitars, and slot cars? In the same week? This has to be some kind of good omen.
Full descriptions of each game are after the break.

Nintendo weekly releases – Super Star Wars, Nyx Quest, Rock ‘n’ Roll Climber

This week’s spat of Nintendo downloads has something for everyone, even Star Wars-loving, Brain Age-devouring, rock-climbing aficionados. Finally, Nintendo’s reached out to that notoriously vocal demographic.
On the Virtual Console, you’ll find 2D beat-you-up Super Star Wars, while a plentiful WiiWare harvest has brought forth both Rock ‘n’ Roll Climber and Nyx Quest: Kindred Spirits. You may remember Nyx Quest as that Kid Icarus-ish title that was forced to change its name.
There’s also an artsy take on Brain Age, if you’re into that kind of thing.
Full details on each game are after the break.

Nintendo weekly releases — Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Battle Poker, 5 Spots Party

Nintendo’s put out its list of downloads for the week, with this week’s obvious standout being Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord.
There’s also Battle Poker, which — sadly — puts a heavy emphasis on the poker, and not the battling. 5 Spots Party rounds out the Wii’s portion of the line-up, and Art Style: Zengage (uh, yeah) serves as the sole DSiWare representative for the week.
The Virtual Console, meanwhile, is hiding its head in shame over a release-free week.
Full details on each game are after the break.

GDC: Rock and Roll Climber to rock the faces of rockfaces

During today’s Nintendo GDC keynote, Satoru Iwata demonstrated a title called Rock and Roll Climber for WiiWare.
Apparently, it allows players to defy virtual gravity by scaling rockfaces using the Wii Balance Board in conjunction with the Wii-mote and Nunchuck.
Then, when you reach the top of your craggy adversary, you’re given the ability to spit in gravity’s face with a rockin’ guitar jam session. Space travel doesn’t have anything on this.
We can’t wait until the inevitable volcano level. Guitars, rockfaces, and hot lava. Sign us up.
