While the rumored Wii price cut for May 15 is still around a month away, Best Buy has already put the console on sale, although it’s not as cheap as the rumored price of $150.

A supposed Target ad for the week of September 27 has surfaced and features a sale on Wii for $199.

This is a $50 price drop just like the one rumored for Toys R Us in the US.

Nintendo has commented that the price cuts are retailer decisions only, and not an official one sanctioned or implemented by the company.

Nintendo has told CVG that there are “no plans” at present to reduce the cost of Wii.

“We currently have no plans to cut the price of Wii,” a Nintendo spokesperson told the site. “Current talk of price cuts is rumour and speculation. This is rumor and speculation as Nintendo have made no announcements on price.

“Furthermore this is most likely retailer led much in the same way retailers in the UK offer price promotions on our products.”

The comment was in reaction to the Toys R Us add sporting a $50 console reduction in North America.

Guess it’s just a sale at the retailer, then.

Michael Pachter says that Nintendo will slash the price for Wii later this year in order for the company to meet its shipment target.

“Wii supply has finally exceeded demand, so we expect hardware sales to show year-over-year decreases for the first half of 2009,” he said in a research note.

“In order to hit its full-year Wii shipment forecast, we expect Nintendo to cut the price of the Wii before [the] holiday, likely to $199.99.”

Pachter also believes that a PS3 price cut is still coming,  which will lead Microsoft to counter with its own special deal.

“In the second half of the year, we expect Sony to cut price for the PS3, and if the cut is deep enough, we expect Microsoft to respond (either with bundles or with a price cut of its own, even as Microsoft just introduced a Xbox 360 Elite bundle with free games Halo 3 and Fable II).”

Nintendo has once again said that the company has no plans for a Wii price cut any time soon.

When asked about it once more, Nintendo UK’s David Yarnton told Eurogamer that it will not happen this year, and economic conditions may not allow it to happen in 2010 either.

“No. We’ve no plans. Nintendo doesn’t like selling products at a loss. We’ve been round for quite a long time and we’re a very successful company,” he said. “It depends on the currency exchange – we can’t make any predictions there.”

This reiterates what Iwata told investors in May when he said that the company had no plans for one.

“While the price cut is said to surely increase demand, it must be clear from a variety of analysis so far that the effect cannot last very long,” he said. “Accordingly, if we really do enact a price cut, it must be exactly when it can maximize the business.”
