Reggie: Next gen Nintendo hardware move is “far into the future”
More from Kotaku’s Reggie interview: this time, the NoA president’s reiterated comments made recently to GameTrailers on Wii HD, saying any major hardware update is “far into the future.”
Here’s the quote:
“The fundamental issue in the logic flow is that — and this is what I’m hearing, whether it’s from you or Geoff or Michael himself — is that, gosh it’s such an opportunity to take HD capability and link it with the Wii. And what we have said, repeatedly, is that that’s not the way we at Nintendo do things. The way we at Nintendo do things is, you know, when we will move to a new generation, it’s because there are some fundamental things the [current] console cannot do. What that says is that simply the addition of HD capability will not be the next step for us. There will be more to it. There will be additional capability. There will be additional elements, and, given that, it is far into the future.”
And there you have it. No HD Mario for you until 2050. Tough tits.

Reggie: “There is no Wii HD”
You can consider this buried. GTTV’s just gone live with its Nintendo special, and Reggie Fils-Aime has said that Wii HD is a categorical no-no.
“Michael [Pachter] continues to be the only one that believes this is going to happen,” the NoA president told presenter Geoff Keighley.
“I don’t know how forcefully we can say that there is no Wii HD.”

Hollenshead: Microsoft in “best position” to launch next-gen hardware

id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has told VG247 that Microsoft is in the “best position” to be the first platform holder out the gate with next-gen hardware.
“Somebody’s going to do it, and – to me – probably the player who’s in the best position to do so is Microsoft, because I do think they’ve recouped a lot of the costs of their console,” said the exec, speaking at QuakeCon earlier this month.
“Maybe they’ll push the [Xbox 360] to year six – maybe seven – but I’ve got to believe that they’re already planning the transition now, and they have their eye on the ball as to what it is, because I think they see that there are some weaknesses that they can exploit with what’s going on at Sony.”
Don’t crap your pants just yet, sports fans. We’ve got a long way to go with the current machines, Todd added.
“I think that how the industry handles this next console transition is crucial. Because the PS3 install base is still a problem for Sony and for PS3 developers; the 360 and PS3 are still at price points that are well above what you’d consider to be mainstream or mass market. We still have very large titles that sell a lot of units across the different platforms. So, as we see that unfold, I think that is going to be the key thing to watch,” he said.
To say we had a massive interview with Todd Hollenshead is an understatement. How big is it? Check for yourself. Loads of shit on Rage, DOOM 4 and that canceled id project, Darkness.

Wedbush: Wii HD could “seriously damage” a PS3 “comeback”

It’s the report that keeps on giving. Wedbush Morgan’s exhaustive state-of-the-Union paper – Money for Nothing: How Ancillary Revenues Can Extend The Console Cycle – reckons a 2010 launch of an HD Wii SKU could bang PS3′s “comeback” chances right up the chuff.
The company also reckons we’re likely to see a Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus.
From the document:
Our vision is that Nintendo will wait until the cost of a console with technical specifications similar to the Xbox 360 (1080p output at 60 frames per second) is sufficiently low that it can launch close to the $199.99 price point. We would expect such a console to be fully backward compatible with the current Wii, but would expect the new console to have additional features and functionality. It is possible that Nintendo will redesign the existing Wii controller (the “Wiimote”) to include builtin Wii Motion Plus, and also possible that the Wii Plus (our best guess for the name of the Wii HD) will include a hard drive.
In our view, if Nintendo can offer such a device by year-end 2010, it will be in a position to seriously damage Sony’s chances of a comeback this cycle. We would expect publishers to support such a move, given that the cost of porting an Xbox 360 game to the new Wii Plus HD format would likely be lower than the cost of building a ground up Wii game (we estimate under $5 million). Should Nintendo be able to convince publishers like EA and Take-Two that the Wii Plus should be supported by the entire EA Sports catalog and by the next installment of Grand Theft Auto, it should be in a position to successfully convince consumers that the Wii Plus is the last console they will ever need to purchase.
Want some more from the report? Good. Because there’s an epic amount yet to go.
