Instead, it has been replaced with an endless free trial.

The new trial gives new and returning players and opportunity to play any of the 24 character careers and transfer them over once the player decides to purchase the game. There is a progression max of level 10, though.

Still, not a bad thing overall.

Weekly MMO news round-up: Fallen Earth gets screened, CrimeCraft enters beta, Ultima needs testers

eq2

Leading up to E3, there is not a megaton of news with anything, let alone MMOs. The week was basically all about screens, delving into crafting systems and character sheets, and general stuff that you can view on any online game’s website. It’s called pre-E3 malaise, and today it’s pretty thick.

However, we have dug through the mire once more to bring you something in the way of MMO news that didn’t hit the front page.

You can catch up on it all after the break.

WAR’s Land of the Dead detailed

waronline1b

In an interview with EG yesterday, Warhammer Online’s executive producer Jeff Hickman and creative director Paul Barnett spoke at length about the forthcoming Land of the Dead zone in Warhammer Online.

Part of the Call to Arms live expansion, LotD will feature loads of stuff to do and various ways to get booty. It’ll be opened by “a race for access between the Order and Destruction factions,” apparently. Watch your step mind: once you’re inside you’re always open to attack from players of the other faction – even when in instances.

“Tomb Kings, or The Land of the Dead, is a massive zone which is broken up into two parts – The Necropolis and the Tomb of the Vulture Lord,” said Hickman.

“It is RVR-gated. In other words, each realm must fight for ownership and the dungeon is expected to change hands nightly. It is full of new and interesting Public Quests, new lairs, refreshing game mechanics, new rewards and loot and generally awesome new stuff.”

“It is the ultimate sandbox zone,” added Barnett. “Many of the great things from Darkness Falls will be built upon. Tokens, other loot methods, wide level range, and the thrill of your enemy always breathing down your back. Lots of opportunities for RVR within the dungeon itself.”

“You can be attacked anywhere in the Land of the Dead,” said Hickman. “There is a huge open-world area, but also some instanced areas. In any of these areas, your enemy can hunt you down and fight you (as long as they gain control of the dungeon while you are in it). Even the instances are not safe.”

Sounds excellent. Hand on our heart, we think it does.

Rumor: Layoffs at Mythic affect senior designers

warhammeronlinea3

Joystiq is rumouring that between 60 and 130 people have been laid off at Mythic.

Some of redundancies are apparently from WAR development staff, supposedly including senior designers.

Mark Jacobs, however, made a statement on the official Warhammer Online site claiming that staffing numbers are attributed to consumer need and progress with game design.

“With respect to customer service, quality assurance and play testing, prior to the launch of WAR, we hired additional people to deal with the rush of demand associated with an MMO launch,” he said.

“Since the launch last year, the demand for customer service has gone down as players become more familiar with the game. Obviously, demand for a large QA and play-testing staff also falls after launch. As a result, we saw a staff reduction which is in line with the company-wide initiative.”

We’ve contacted Mark for a further statement.
