Dawn of War II: The Last Stand detailed, to be shown at PAX

dow2

The Last Stand is upcoming  multiplayer mode for Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II that will be a free download for players of the strategy title.

GameSpy got a hands-on preview, and the site says that two players will be controlling Heroes fighting off waves of enemies.

There is loads more than that through the link, along with a couple nice screens for it.

No word on when it can be expected, but word has it that it may be sometime in October.

Relic will be showing the new mode off at PAX 2009 next weekend, so hopefully we will know more then.

Eurogamer France a video of it. You should watch it.

More details on upcoming patch for Dawn of War II

dawnofwarii7

Relic has released more information regarding the upcoming patch for Dawn of War II.

Patch 1.3 will include new abilities, armor, wargear and weapons

The new scout armor provides a burst of speed to squads facing melee attacks, while new a weapon called the Roar of Revelation, is a shotgun that stuns and causes knockbacks from stealth.

A new sword, Ardent Wrath, dishes out 52 damage-per-second and can stun enemies with a charge attack. There’s also a new ability for the Dreadnaught assault cannon.

Cool stuff.

Extensive patch notes are through the link, but it mainly boils down to new multiplayer maps and bug fixes.

The Dawn Of War 2 community site says the update is currently in testing at Microsoft and should be released within a few days of launch.

Bad things? Leaderboards and player stats will be reset when it goes live due to formatting changes.

The game’s out on February 20.

Steam flogging Dawn of War Soulstorm cheap

dawnofwar2a7.jpg

In lieu of the Dawn of War II beta in February, Steam is offering THQ and Relic’s Dawn of War – Soulstorm at a 75 percent discount.

Remember, that all Soulstorm owners get early beta access, so there’s even more incentive in shelling out some coppers on this old classic.

If you need reminding of how awesome the RTS looks, then hit the link for the latest footage.

New Dawn of War II footage shows Tyranids

dawnofwar22b.jpg

Over on THQ’s site you can see a rather super looking new Dawn of War II gameplay video showing the Tyranid race.

The amount of sprites on screen, the complete array of colour, all running at a rock solid frame rate is really rather impressive we hope you’ll agree.

If Relic’s strategy slayer is your cup of tea, then you’ll be pleased to know that the Dawn of War II beta starts at the end of the month.

Now go watch.

According to this IGN piece, THQ Australia’s advertising for “videogame development talent across all disciplines to work on an action game for Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 based on the popular Warhammer 40,000 universe from Games Workshop.”

That’s clear enough. The ad appeared on Tsumea this week, and says the firm’s Brisbane-based studio is looking for a Lead Artist, Lead Animator, Environment Artist, Animator, Senior Designer, Audio Designer, Engine programmer, Game Programmer and QA Lead.

No detail on the game’s given by the job ad, but THQ Studio Australia’s website says that: “We are currently looking for people to work on a next-gen brutal, intimate melee combat game using a world-class brand.”

Want to get brutal in Australia? Now you can.

Ton of Dawn of War 2 info hits, game will use CoH engine

dawnofwar3.jpg

Bet PC Gamer’s happy. Belgian magazine PC Gameplay’s preview of Dawn of War 2′s been internetalised properly now by the wacky kids at Neogaf, following a few sketchy details this morning and what looks like the game’s first teaser movie. Here’s what to expect from Relic’s next-gen RTS.

  • Uses the Essence 2.0 engine with Havok physics, all optimised for DX10 and multicore support.
  • It looks great, think of the DoW intro but with a bit less polygons here and there (in terms of lighting and all that it looks almost exactly the same).
  • Units also use CoH-like unit AI for awareness and pathfinding to find cover and such.
  • While DoW 2 shares the same (upgraded probably) engine as CoH it won’t be “CoH in space”, while soldiers in CoH will ask themselves if flanking the enemy is the right option, in DoW2 it will be more like Space Marines asking themselves if they should use their jetpacks to jump over an Ork squad to attack them in the back. Different settings, different kinds of warfare.
  • Preview only showed a destroyed city landscape, akin to DoW (but more detailed), other tilesets will offer deserts, jungles, mountains and other cities.
  • Only the Orkz and Space Marines were revealed, more races on the way obviously and to be to revealed later this year (though how many isn’t known).
  • Co-op campaign for both the Orkz and Space Marines, apparently not for the other to-be-revealed races.
  • More focus on making units and squads unique; every unit has got a name (at least in the campaign it seems), more details and more animations.
  • Relic wants to give players rewards at the end of a mission like wargear (armor, weapons, rare objects); “Let’s pimp out squads with cool stuff!”, you will see these items in-game as well of course.
  • You’ll fight your way through the campaign with the same squads.
  • You can’t control more than six squads! I am not sure if this is campaign-only but the preview made it sound like it wasn’t.
  • The squads are going to be a lot more interesting than before though.
  • A squad leader (one or several?) will need to survive if you want to complete a mission; you really have to look out for your squads and don’t treat them like cannon fodder.
  • There is a lot more interesting commentary from the units as well; if your SM commander is holding a Thunder Hammer f.e. then the opponent will specifically comment on that, Ork Warchief saying something like “Ooh, nice hammer, but mine is bigger!”. The warchief will say something else if the commander doesn’t have the hammer.
  • The campaign lets Space Marines operate from a spaceship, you’ll get a view of an underlying planet and you’ll be able to choose from different missions (which are tagged with difficulty colours, green, blue and red).
  • Certain reward items won’t be useable at once in the campaign, so they’ll be taken back to the SM spaceship for research.
  • Dreadnought can now also trample Orkz.
  • No sea or air units (though jetpacks are still in of course).
  • Development team of 55 people has been working on it since September 2006.
  • Release in early 2009 or later.

THQ financials: Warhammer 40K MMO up and running

warhammer40kdawnofwar.jpg

THQ boss Brian Farrell, speaking in an investor call following the release of third quarter financials last night, said he’s seen a build of the previously announced Warhammer 40K MMO running at Vigil Games and said he was “pleasantly surprised” at the state of the game, adding “so far, so good”. Farrell noted that the title was some way off. No release date has been given for this as yet.
