Valve is set to launch the Left 4 Dead 2 beta on Linux this week. Those who already own the Steam version of the game will receive access soon, alongside the Extended Mutation System that has been available since February.

Valve founder Gabe Newell recently gave an hour-long lecture at the University of Texas. You can watch it all here – and I recommend that you do as it’s very interesting. At the 42-minute mark Newell discusses his vision for a Steam marketplace free from the bottleneck of publisher requests, and why he would like to take Valve out of that equation altogether, allowing content creators to publish freely in an open market. Think of a big open-invite market stall with no middleman.

Newell discussed all of this and more at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas yesterday, and it’s a very interesting chat that touches on the issue of productivity in the PC market and the shipping of the original Half-Life.
