Epic Games has released a new video for its Inside Unreal series, in which Jordan Walker and Zak Parrish take the viewer on a tour of Unreal Engine 4. Today’s video focuses on Character Aesthetics, and explains how the firm’s artists “took advantage of UE4’s new layered material system,” and physically-based shading models to “define the look of characters” in the Infiltrator demonstration. If one Unreal Engine GDC 2013 tech demo wasn’t enough, this is a great day for all six of you. Called Infiltrator, the trailer shows off some very impressive lighting and transparency effects, the likes of which you will not have seen since the last time Epic demonstrated its apparently magic tech.

Nintendo thinks the Wii U began the eighth generation of video games hardware; random other people think it’s actually 7th-gen (also known as current-gen for the past seven years). We may be finding out know what the real answer is. First, Frostbite 3 games (including Battlefield 4, Dragon Age 3 and the next Mass Effect) won’t be on Wii U. Next, The Unreal Engine 4 games won’t, either.

Daylight, the procedurally generated psychological thriller from Zombie Studios, has a new video available showing the Unreal Engine 4 powered game running. It shows the main character in the game walking around an abandoned hospital with only her cell phone for illumination. Zombie says no two experiences will be alike in the game, and it is “best played alone in the dark.” Each time a new game is started, it will be a new world with new content and encounters. Sounds interesting. Daylight will be released on Steam this year, and will run around the $20 mark. Additional chapters are to be released post launch. Thanks, Evil Avatar.

Phosphor Games has put its superhero action-sandbox title Project Awakened on Steam Greenlight. Now you have another place in which to cheer for it. Epic Games has entered into a long-term deal with NCSoft, which grants the later a license to use Unreal Engine 4 for its upcoming projects. It is the the first Korean studio to license the engine. NCSoft has licensed previous version of the engine in the past: Lineage II used Unreal Engine 2 and Blade & Soul was developed with Unreal Engine 3. Additional details around regarding NCSoft’s use of Unreal Engine 4 in its projects are to be announced at a later date.
