Unreal Engine 4 for 2012-2018, says Capps

Epic head Mike Capps has given a rough date for the release of Unreal Engine 4 to Gamasutra: you’re going to be waiting a while, from the sound of it.

“We’ve got Unreal [Engine] 4 in production right now… it’s going to be in the next console generation – our rough guess is 2012-2018.”

The developer’s biz dev honcho, Mark Rein, pretty much said all this of the next version of the company’s franchise tech back in April, but new words are always welcome.

Unreal Engine 4 “years away”, says Rein

Epic chief Mark Rein has told Eurogamer that the fourth Unreal Engine won’t be happening anytime soon, and is planned to accompany the next hardware cycle.

“It’s just a research project today,” he said. “Our plan is that it will be aimed at the next generation so it is many years away.”

Rein’s been chatty in the last day or so, talking to us exclusively about Gears of War 2 and the EA Unreal Engine licensing deal that was announced yesterday.
