Left 4 Dead pre-orders now 60% ahead of Orange Box

left4dead2.jpg

According to this Edge piece, Left 4 Dead pre-orders are now 60 percent ahead of those for The Orange Box, up for 40 percent in the lead at the beginning of October.

“People had really strong reactions to Left 4 Dead when we started showing it,” said company boss Gabe Newell.

“Our pre-orders are running 60 percent ahead of Orange Box. This in combination with the fact that it is a new IP made us think that an extensive marketing program made a lot of sense.”

“Extensive” means a $10 million ad package.

Valve told the site that promotions will mix humor and horror and will air November 9 through 28 on ABC, ESPN, Fox, MTV, Comedy Central, USA, Spike TV and other networks.

“Zero chance” of Left 4 Dead PS3 this year

left4dead13.jpg

Valve’s Doug Lombardi has said those hoping for a PS3 version of Left 4 Dead this year can go on wishing: it’s not happening.

“There’s zero chance of it happening this year,” he told CVG. “It’s something that’s being talked about right now as the game is gaining popularity and looking like it’s going to be a hit.”

“Hit” is about right. Pre-orders are well up, with or without a PS3 version.

Game’s out in November. More through the link.

Lombardi: Left 4 Dead pre-orders 40% higher than Orange Box

left4dead14.jpg

Speaking to VGChartz, Valve’s Doug Lombardi has said that Left 4 Dead pre-orders are trouncing those taken by The Orange Box.

“Pre-orders for Left 4 Dead are currently exceeding Orange Box pre-orders by well over 40 percent, this driven largely by the 10 percent off promotion being offered now for both versions,” he said.

“And one could assume this trend over Orange will continue as the pre-launch demo hits and the largest consumer advertising campaign for any Valve game begins on buses, buildings, billboards, TV, magazines, and web sites in the next couple weeks.”

More through there. The multiplay shooter’s out for 360 and PC in November.

left4dead10.jpg

“There’s zero chance of it happening this year,” he said. “It’s something that’s being talked about right now as the game is gaining popularity and looking like it’s going to be a hit.”

EA developing Left 4 Dead for PS3?

left4dead2.jpg

According to this Destructoid piece, the Official PlayStation Mag (presumably in the US) is reporting that Left 4 Dead is coming to the PS3, with Electronic Arts developing.

Valve had previously said that it had no plans to release a PS3 version of the multiplayer zombie shooter, and would only work on the game for PC and 360.

If true, the news is likely to raise the eyebrows of many, especially after EA looked after a less than stellar PS3 port of Valve’s Orange towards the end of last year.

We’ve just asked Valve for comment.

Valve’s upcoming zombie shooter, Left 4 Dead, will be released in Russia thanks to a partnership between the US company and local distributor Akella.

Left 4 Dead promo “funnies” in the works

left4dead3.jpg

According to this RPS interview with Valve’s Chet Faliszek, the team is working on character-driven promo movies, similar to the ads release for TF2.

“We’ll do something like that for Left 4 Dead,” said Faliszek. “We have a bunch of guys working on it. We’re hooked on it. They’re too funny. Speaking as someone who doesn’t actually have to do that work, I’d say that they’re totally hilarious. Yeah, I’m sure the team don’t think so. It’s a long slog to get the funny.”

The TF2 shorts were very cool clips showing each character class and giving a taste of Valve’s take on their personalities. This, then, is good news.

There’s no release date for Left 4 Dead at the moment, but expect to see it on PC and 360, at least, in September this year.

GDC: Valve confirms Left 4 Dead left off PS3, moots Source for Wii

left4dead2.jpg

Speaking to videogaming247 at GDC today, Valve’s Doug Lombardi has confirmed that highly anticipated zombie shooter Left 4 Dead is definitely not planned for release on PlayStation 3, and said that if the company were to tool up for a format outside PC and Xbox 360 it would be Wii.

“We were really crappy at bringing games to consoles,” he said. He cited the time it took to move the original Half-Life games to console formats as an example of how the company had come “really late” to console development. He said that while the focus had always been on PC, the company had now moved up a gear to produce games simultaneously on Xbox 360 and PC, but that it had limited interest in developing for Playstation 3.

“EA wanted to do Orange Box on PS3 and they handled it,” said Lombardi. “Left 4 Dead isn’t coming out on PS3 because we’ve not had that call. If the phone rang we would have the conversation, certainly, but it hasn’t happened.”

Lombardi suggested that Left 4 Dead’s Counter-Strike origins might have made it less appealing to PlayStation audiences and the publishers trying to serve them.

“They saw Portal and Team Fortress 2 and said ‘Oh wow’, so I guess that sold it,” he said. “We’ll have to wait and see on Left 4 Dead.”

Lombardi also revealed that, “If Valve were to develop in-house for another format, it would be the Wii. It’s growing, there’s already a huge user-base, and it’s fun. Source is really scaleable. We can do that.”

Left 4 Dead is being developed by Valve-owned Turtle Rock Studios and has no specific release date as yet.
