Turning Point not aimed at “core gamer” says Spark

Alternate reality World War FPS Turning Point wasn’t aimed at the mass market, developer Spark has claimed, and was instead a “high concept” game.

“You know, I think that when you try to do games that are about a mass market, and Turning Point is definitely a high concept idea, that with the time and money we had we did the best to execute on, our target was not really the core gamer,” said Spark CEO Craig Allen. “I think that we’re finding that the people who look at it like, ‘Is this going to be fun, something I can drop into, in a world I haven’t seen before and have a good time?’ really love the game.

“People that are looking at it with more of a critical eye of ‘Is this game revolutionary, is it doing play mechanics I’ve never seen before, is it driving new technology?’… it was never meant to do those things. If people look at it in the right way, I think they really enjoy what they see. You can certainly look at it and say it’s not revolutionary, so those opinions are certainly a lot more critical.”

Turning Point’s had a bit of a rocky road to market, getting a panning over its demo, a backlash Spark took pains to address publicly. The game releases on March 14.

Pre-order Turning Point, get postcards

Codemasters has revealed details of its US pre-order campaign for Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, the alternative history WWII shooter from developer Spark. US gamers who sign up early will get loads of weirdy Nazi-ish stuff, including post cards featuring game art, acces codes to “enhance the game experience”, a behind-the-scenes DVD and a 1931-53 timeline poster that shoud explain why there are swaztikas all over the Statue of Liberty. You cannot say fairer than that, you lucky, lucky people.

Turning Point is set in 1953, assumes the Nazis won WWII and starts with boatloads of mental Germans launching an attack on New York. “Late February” is when you’re going to get it, apparently.

Spark promises Turning Point improvements after demo

Developer Spark’s issued a statement here saying that issues related to the recently released demo for Turning Point: Fall of Liberty have been rectified for launch.

“Since the demo was finalized, the team has put several months of work into the code and we thought you might like to know that a number of questions raised by those trying the demo will be positively addressed in the final game,” said a spokesperson, citing optimized targeting and movement, refined AI behavior and other kind of fundamental stuff as being pepped up in recent work.

We hope you got that movement stuff fixed, guys. The alternate reality WWII shooter’s down for a Q1 release in Europe, to be published by Codemasters.
