Tomb Raider: Underworld DLC Beneath the Ashes – delayed earlier in the month – has been scheduled for a February 24 release.

Lara’s Shadow, the next batch of content, will arrive on March 10 as a 1.07Gb download.

Bug fixes will be included in a patch about the same time, and are listed after the jump.

Thanks, Eurogamer.

*This is a list of the bug fixes included in the title update. Title updates themselves are actually restricted in size.

*Note – references to TRU mean the original “Tomb Raider Underworld”

In some circumstances reward progress could be lost when restarting TRU either through a save game reload, or through starting a new game.

In rare circumstances, animated water running down walls (textures) in TRU could cease to animate.

While being “teleported” during a cinematic (where the player will end the cinematic in a new position), there were rare circumstances where Lara would be left with a very high velocity which caused her current or next jump to throw her much further.

While executing an adrenaline attack (which causes the game to go into a “bullet time” slow motion effect), if the player restarted the game, or reloaded a save game, the subsequent menu animation for costume and weapon selection would be in slow motion.

Under rare circumstances the player could teleport from one fluid movement primitive to another.

Under some circumstances Lara could “miss” picking up a portable object, which led to her having to re-attempt the pick up.

Under certain circumstances the full screen effects for adrenaline mode could become corrupted.

Under rare circumstances engaging and pulling an object with the grapple caused a crash.

Fixed numerous issues in the code that was causing conflicts between OLAPI and the system listener relating to saving loading and mounting of downloadable content packs.

Fix for crash when loading a game that was previously saved while the player was inserting an object

Fixed a rare crash when trying to load a save game on level 5.

Fixed a bug where the player could force the slow down from the adrenaline mode to never end (even though the mode itself had ended).

When downloading content from Xbox Live, the current language selection no longer gets changed back to English when the new content is mounted.

When mounting DLC content, the content is now properly associated with a user profile to support HDD roaming.

Other minor issues addressed.

“The guys at Crystal have been looking into this for a long time because they really wanted to include it. The good news is that I can confirm that a patch for the PS3 version of Tomb Raider: Underworld is being worked on that will enable Trophy Support.

Posting on the Tomb Raider forums, TR: Underworld creative director Eric Lindstrom has confirmed that he was one of the 30 laid off last week, and has said that he wished Crystal Dynamics could have spent more time working on the game.

“I absolutely wish we could have spent more time polishing Underworld,” said Lindstrom. “I take my share of responsibility of aiming so high that we had a reduced ability to spend time on polish.”

He also wanted to answer the critics with regard to the 360 exclusive DLC:

“I cut content from the game and it later turned out to be possible to use in DLC, for which I was happy,” he said adding that, “it was a coincidence that we had some candidate content for DLC when the deal was made. I was glad for it, otherwise the stuff I had to cut out would have never seen the light of day.”

Eidos said this morning that Lara Croft was due a complete overhaul.

Happy New Year. We’re glad we shut down over Christmas. You didn’t miss a whole lot.

By far the most important story over the break was news that Free Radical cut its workforce by 140 to just 40.

The developer was confirmed as being in administration just before the Christmas holiday.

Speaking to 1UP, Cameron Gunn of administrators ReSolve Partners said, “We made around 140 employees redundant yesterday, effective 31 December (the date up to which they had been paid). We’re still trading on with the remaining 40 or so employees, have advertised the business for sale and have received some strong interest.”

News broke mid-December that staff had turned up for work only to be locked with a notice on the door telling them to adjourn to a nearby hotel.

Free Radical aside, other noteworthy Christmas news included confirmation that Mistwalker JRPG Cry On has been cancelled.

“AQI decided to cancel the project after analyzing the current market environment and forecasts for the future. We deeply apologize for troubling those who were awaiting its release,” said a company rep.

Cry On was apparently part of “Hironobu Sakaguchi’s triumvirate of Xbox 360 titles,” says this <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172061" target="blank"">1UP piece (the other two being Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey), and for those of you who don’t know, the game “was to be an action-RPG featuring a Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack [and] character designs by Kimihiko Fujisaka.”

Full round up below.

A Lord of the Rings Conquest multiplayer demo hit Xbox Live over the Christmas period, and it was also confirmed that a Skate 2 demo was be available this Thursday.

PlayStation 3 owners weren’t left out in the cold, however, as PSN got a bumper Yuletide update, including the previously announced Wipeout HD demo.

Capcom announced that PSP will be given its undivided attention in 2009, with a spokesperson writing on the PlayStation Blog, “So what’s in store for 09? Well, I’m working with Grace and Ro at SCEA to come up with some innovative ways we can offer games and programs on the PlayStation Store. You can expect to see a whole slew of downloadable PSP and PSone titles from our vault next year.”

Staying on the PS3 tip, Media Molecule’s Alex Evans told IGN that the team has got LittleBigPlanet running in first person mode, if you can believe that.

And just to keep the Sony first-party end up, Uncharted: Among Thieves creative director Amy Hennig told Edge magazine that Nathan Drake will be romping around Tibet, have a love interest and use ‘action stealth’ in the upcoming sequel.

In more action adventure news, Eidos and Microsoft said it would give away a wetsuit to Xbox 360 Tomb Raider: Underworld owners, while everyone could download the entire soundtrack for free from the Tomb Raider Chronicles website.

Famitsu reported that publisher Spike is porting Way of the Samurai 3 to 360, the game to be released in Japan on February 26.

Square Enix said it will assess the re-use of Epic’s Unreal Engine only if its developers feel a game warrants its use. Last Remnant’s art director, Yusuke Naora, told Edge, “The decision on whether to use Unreal for future projects will be decided on a case-by-case basis; we’re not going into game productions thinking we want to use this or that middleware.

“Rather, we’ll examine what it is we want to achieve with a game and then decide on the best tools to use in reaching that goal.”

Last bit from Japan: Kotaku has translated this Dengeki piece listing the country’s best sellers in 2008. Suffice to say Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G won, with Pokemon Platinum (DS) and Wii Fit coming second and third respectively. Full top 30 through the link.

Bungie released some Halo ODST concept art over Christmas, showing mostly marine garb. BioWare got in on the screenshot action too, releasing new images and concept art of upcoming Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic.

Last, but not least, the BBC published the thoughts of gaming luminaries such as Will Wright and Peter Molyneux on games and gaming in 2008.

A fitting end to the year. Thanks to Kotaku, 1UP and IGN for all the stories.

“It’s been crazy,” she said. “I was travelling yesterday so I came from LA and flew over to New York for today, and then today we have had interviews all over New York. I have been ferried around everywhere and it is very exciting, I am meeting lots of new people.

It doesn’t appear to be slowing down, either.

“I’ve got some more dates in the UK next week and then I think I am going of to Italy a couple of weeks after that, but the last two months have been absolutely crazy, I have been all over the globe,” she said.

“I have been all over Europe, and then I’ve been to Australia, Singapore, Dubai, all over Scandinavia, Belgium, Amsterdam, South Africa, and now I am in the States. So it has been a really crazy time.”

More through there.

Eidos’s British PR firm, Barrington Harvey, has issued a statement on the subject of UK Tomb Raider: Underworld reviews after it came to light this afternoon that sites had been requested to not publish score for the game lower than 80 percent until Monday, three days after it goes on sale.

The story arose after Gamespot UK journalist Guy Cocker wrote on his Twitter on Wednesday that he had been told that, “If you’re planning on reviewing Tomb Raider Underworld at less than an 8.0, we need you to hold your review till Monday.”

VG247 then contacted Barrington Harvey to be told by a rep: “That’s right. We’re trying to manage the review scores at the request of Eidos.”

When asked why, the spokesperson said: “Just that we’re trying to get the Metacritic rating to be high, and the brand manager in the US that’s handling all of Tomb Raider has asked that we just manage the scores before the game is out, really, just to ensure that we don’t put people off buying the game, basically.”

The following statement is from Simon Byron, one of Barrington Harvey’s directors. In its entirety:

Barrington Harvey is not in the position of telling reviewers what they can and cannot say. We love Tomb Raider and believe it merits a score of at least 8/10, but if someone disagrees that’s entirely their prerogative. No problem at all. Seriously: no problem.

Our original NDA stated that in order to receive an advance copy of the game, reviewers agreed not to post reviews ahead of 5:00pm, Wednesday 19th November 2008. Nothing else. No further obligations whatsoever.

As you can clearly see from the scores posted so far, Barrington Harvey has no issue with scores of below eight out of 10 being posted online. The Eurogamer review in questions caused “problems” in so much as it originally contained a couple of minor factual inaccuracies which, to its credit, the site has quickly rectified and addressed (without, quite rightly, changing the context of the review).

Any site, be it Gamespot or whoever, is entirely within their rights to post whatever score they want and no-one is under any sort of obligation to delay any review.

As an ex-journalist myself, I firmly believe in editorial integrity and the right to express an individual opinion. As an agency, we never – ever – make demands of the press in terms of awarding scores; at the end of the day, they are free to score as they wish.

Barrington Harvey has been working hard to ensure the launch scores of Tomb Raider Underworld are in line with our internal review predictions over the launch weekend – but to suggest that we can in some way “silence” reviews of the game is slightly overstating our influence.

Tomb Raider: Underworld releases today for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Update: Barrington Harvey’s isued a formal statement on this. See it here.

Eidos UK PR firm Barrington Harvey has confirmed that British sites are being asked not to post Tomb Raider: Underworld reviews with scores lower than 80 percent until Monday.

The game releases today for 360 and PS3.

Gamespot UK journalist Guy Cocker revealed the tactic in a Twitter post on Wednesday that said: “call from Eidos–if you’re planning on reviewing Tomb Raider Underworld at less than an 8.0, we need you to hold your review till Monday.”

Said a Barrington Harvey rep on the phone this afternoon: “That’s right.

British site Eurogamer has already gone live with a 7/10 score, an act the rep said had caused “problems”.

OXM UK has also posted a 7.0 score.

The news is unlikely to go down well. Eidos’s efforts at controlling review scores are still fresh in the mind: it was a row over Gamespot’s 6/10 review of Kane & Lynch that cost popular US journalist Jeff Gerstmann his job.

Tomb Raider: Underworld’s Metacritic average stands at 78 percent.

Eidos has shipped Tomb Raider: Underworld, for release on Friday in the UK.

“Tomb Raider: Underworld brings to life a realistic world that fully compliments Lara Croft’s bold personality,” said Crystal Dynamics boss Sean Vesce.

“We continue to innovate on the brand that defined the action-adventure genre and we are excited to introduce fans and gamers to an immersive, believable world that they can explore and conquer.”

It’s out on DS, PC, PS2, PS3, Wii and 360. Don’t forget that you’ll need the 360 version if you’re wanting to play the two extra content chapters planned for December and early next year.

Press release after the break.

Eidos Interactive Ltd., creator of some of the world’s leading videogame properties, today announced that Tomb Raider: Underworld has shipped to retailers for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Games for Windows, PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, Wii and Nintendo DS. Starring videogame icon Lara Croft, Tomb Raider: Underworld is an epic adventure that delivers advanced exploration-based gameplay that gives players a new level of challenge and choice as they solve mysteries from exotic locations around the world.

“Tomb Raider: Underworld brings to life a realistic world that fully compliments Lara Croft’s bold personality,” said Sean Vesce, General Manager of Crystal Dynamics. “We continue to innovate on the brand that defined the action-adventure genre and we are excited to introduce fans and gamers to an immersive, believable world that they can explore and conquer.”

Tomb Raider: Underworld™ seamlessly blends exploration, grand scale puzzle solving and combat, taking players on an archeological journey to the ancient nether worlds of the Mediterranean, Thailand, Mexico, the Arctic Sea and more. As fearless adventurer Lara Croft, gamers uncover proof of the existence of the Norse underworld and the mythical Hammer of Thor, and embark on a perilous journey towards a forgotten power that, if unleashed, could lay waste to all of civilization. Lara’s latest adventure introduces scores of new capabilities and state-of-the-art gear, including an active sonar map, multi-purpose grapple and an all-terrain motorbike. With fresh moves that are more intuitive and realistic than ever before, players must master these in order to navigate through treacherous environments and defeat a range of hostile enemies.

Beginning this holiday, fans can extend their Tomb Raider experience with two new downloadable chapters that will be available exclusively on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for Xbox 360. The first new chapter, Tomb Raider: Underworld™ – Beneath the Ashes, will be available in December and takes place after the Underworld story has finished and features a new environment to explore and additional secrets to unlock. The second chapter, Tomb Raider: Underworld™ – Lara’s Shadow, will follow in early 2009 and introduce a new playable character to the Tomb Raider experience.
