id Software boss Todd Hollenshead has said to VG247 that while a multiplayer beta for RAGE is a “doubt,” there may be a PC and Mac demo.
“I doubt there will be an open beta,” said Hollenshead.
“The demo question is hard to answer, because I don’t know what the development cycle will be like. We don’t have anything against demos or tests; we typically do that – probably – to a greater extent than almost anybody else in the industry, so my guess would be that we will have something, but that’s far from set in stone.
“There could be something that’s more along the lines of a PC demo or maybe a Mac demo that comes out from a test perspective. But really, at this point, that’s speculation.”
Demos for the 360 or PS3 versions weren’t mentioned.

DOOM 4 is in development. If you didn’t know that, go out back and beat yourself out there.
But why wasn’t it shown at QuakeCon earlier this month? According to id’s CEO Todd Hollenshead, speaking to VG247 at the event, there was one very simple reason.
“We just never had anything prepared to show for it,” he said.
“It wasn’t like we were going to, and then decided not to. It’s just that the idea is that we want game development to get far along enough that we have something that we feel is representative of a game that we’re going to make and what the final game is going to be.”
Hollenshead did insist the company will about the game a lot more at QuakeCon next year.
“We have a lot of stuff to talk about that’s coming well before the Doom stuff. And it probably makes more sense to talk about it at QuakeCon next year, given that we’ve got Wolfenstein and RAGE. So I think Doom sort of deserves its own spotlight,” he added.

id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has told VG247 that Microsoft is in the “best position” to be the first platform holder out the gate with next-gen hardware.
“Somebody’s going to do it, and – to me – probably the player who’s in the best position to do so is Microsoft, because I do think they’ve recouped a lot of the costs of their console,” said the exec, speaking at QuakeCon earlier this month.
“Maybe they’ll push the [Xbox 360] to year six – maybe seven – but I’ve got to believe that they’re already planning the transition now, and they have their eye on the ball as to what it is, because I think they see that there are some weaknesses that they can exploit with what’s going on at Sony.”
Don’t crap your pants just yet, sports fans. We’ve got a long way to go with the current machines, Todd added.
“I think that how the industry handles this next console transition is crucial. Because the PS3 install base is still a problem for Sony and for PS3 developers; the 360 and PS3 are still at price points that are well above what you’d consider to be mainstream or mass market. We still have very large titles that sell a lot of units across the different platforms. So, as we see that unfold, I think that is going to be the key thing to watch,” he said.

id Software president Todd Hollenshead has told Shack that the firm may put the single-player and multiplayer modes for the Xbox 360 version of RAGE on separate discs.
“We’ll probably have two DVDs for sure, and then the question is, will multiplayer be on a separate disc or not?” said Hollenshead “It makes no sense for a player to swap that disc in multiplayer, right? That’s fail. They have to keep one disc in during multiplayer, can you just put all the multiplayer content on one DVD?”
Still, the number of discs is not set in stone, according to Hollenshead, which brings us back to something John Carmack told Game Informer back in July: RAGE on 3 DVD’s is a problem as the nature of the game won’t really allow for it.

Todd Hollenshead has told QuakeCon attendees that no Doom 4 information will be doled out this year. However, if you still care next year, expect more news at QuakeCon 2010.
“When we show it to you you’re gonna love it,” he said before turning the floor over to John Carmack.
Carmack did happen to say that id is taking the most tightly managed approach to the game, ever, and ongoing work with the Tech 5 engine has helped with the game.
Apparently, the development tools and technology for Doom 4 are a go, so there will be no need to create anything for game while its being developed.

id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has said that company philosophy prevents over-selling its multiplatform Tech 5 engine because games come first and licensing the engine second.
“Our philosophy really hasn’t changed from what it’s always been, which is games first, licenses second,” Hollenshead told Gamasutra. “Working on Rage and working on Doom , which are both id Tech 5 games, are certainly our top priorities.”
Instead of handing out loads of licenses and doing heavy promoting, id has instead “seeded tech out to a few licensees”.
“Our philosophy on that has been that we’d rather have a small number of good-fit, high-quality developer licensees than a bunch that aren’t really good fits or that may not be that bright of a licensee anyway.
“We think that the licensees…are going to have an impact on how the technology is perceived.”

id boss Todd Hollenshead has told GameSpot that Doom 4 is “not a sequel to Doom 3, but it’s not a reboot either”.
“Doom 3 was sort of a reboot,” he added.
“It’s a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back. So I’ll just have to leave it at that.”
Don’t fret, though. It’s still Doom.
“It’s very much deep in development. But everything I’ve seen on it is classic Doom, so I don’t really have worries that people aren’t going to like it and start talking about it,” he said.
So, it’s not a sequel and it’s not a reboot, but it’s “classic Doom”. It’s Doom, then.

Todd Hollenshead has told Gamespot that developing Wii titles as an independent may cost you a lot more than a few years’ work.
“Independent Wii-centric development is not really justified yet,” he said.
“Maybe it’s just that we don’t know how to exploit it, and Nintendo does because they made the Wii, and they’re really that good,” he added.
“I’m not trying to take away from those guys at Nintendo. Their games are awesome–I’m a fan, too. But as a company that doesn’t make Nintendo-type games, the Wii is less of a compelling platform for us to really sink a lot of resources into.”
The exec claimed that Wii was a loss-leader for all but first-party and licensed product.
“if you look at the data, the Wii is Nintendo and then everybody else,” he said.
“And then among everybody else, it’s licensed properties and then stuff that people lose money on.”
We’re going to start developing a Wii game right now.

Speaking with GI, id Software CEO, Todd Hollenshead, said that piracy is a “hidden benefit” when you buy a PC.
When asked about what PC manufacturers could do to help prevent piracy, Hollenshead replied: “There’s lots of things that they could do but typically just they just line up on the wrong side of the argument in my opinion.”
“They have lots of reasons as to why they do that, but I think that there’s been this dirty little secret among hardware manufacturers, which is that the perception of free content – even if you’re supposed to pay for it on PCs – is some sort hidden benefit that you get when you buy a PC, like a right to download music for free or a right to download pirated movies and games.”
