id Software: RAGE multiplayer will be different from DOOM and “what people expect”

id Software has long been considered the originator of the first-person shooter genre by many, and this accolade is something the developer doesn’t take lightly.

As the forerunner of the genre with hallowed titles such as DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein on its resume, the firm decided it wanted to take shooters to the next level by elevating and expanding the gameplay experience. Thus, the idea of RAGE was born, and the developers – long known as the darlings of the PC world – built a new engine, ID Tech 5, in order to bring the shooter to not only the PC crowd but consoles as well.

During the Eurogamer Expo last week, id Software gave a presentation of RAGE, showing off loads of post-apocalyptic shooter, which is filled with scenic vistas; more weapons than Mad Max ever dreamt of; an engaging story; and plenty of vehicular manslaughter.

The developer plans to fully support RAGE post-release with downloadable content, which is good news, but as far as what gamers can expect in terms of multiplayer and co-op, well, everyone will have to wait until next year to find out what id has in store on that front.

Tim Willits, the creative director for the game along with senior producer Jason Kim were on-hand after the presentation to chat with VG247 a bit regarding the title, and you can read what all they had to tell us below.

Interview – RAGE’s Tim Willits

RAGE is id’s first – and apparently only – new IP in quite some time, and the developer’s doing it up in style. Yeah, the post-apocalyptic shooter/driver/toy car driver’s got it all – even its own release date. No more teasing, no more “when it’s done,” no more fooling us into staring into Todd Hollenshead’s dreamy blue eyes until we forget what we were talking about. With RAGE, we’re witnessing the emergence of a new id Software, one that’s not afraid to hunker down and commit.

And we can see why. When you’re able to demo your game on three night-and-day different platforms side-by-side, you’re clearly doing something right. With more than a year to go before launch, though, there’s still plenty more to discuss. Is the release date really set in stone? How about multiplayer? Are dedicated servers in or out? What happens if John Carmack goes into space and explodes? We asked RAGE creative director Tim Willits all those questions and more, and he tolerated our shenanigans to the point that we’re pretty sure he wasn’t lying to us!

Interview – id’s Tim Willits on RAGE

Tim Willits is serious business. The id Software lead designer was a co-owner, joining the developer’s original team in 1995 after impressing with DOOM levels he’d created in his spare time. Fifteen years on, he’s focused on RAGE, the FPS-driving hybrid set to be the firm’s first release since being bought by Zenimax last year.

One-on-ones with Willits don’t happen every day. After a look at a new demo, we were lucky enough to get the opportunity last week in France, grilling him on id Tech 5 licensing, RAGE’s economy, the reason for the game’s slip to 2011 and how many discs you’ll be juggling with the 360 version.

Willits: Rage has “an economy,” “recipes”

Deserty epic Rage is to have money, weird boomerang things and “recipes” used for creating items, id boss Tim Willit’s told NowGamer.

“Rage… has an economy where you are allowed to choose how you spend your money earned through combat and racing,” said the exec.

“You might decide you love the wingstick (a boomerang-cum-shuriken weapon) and stock up on them, or you may feel inclined to purchase parts to build more sentry bots or to keep your armour upgraded and repaired.”

Recipes? All true.

“We’re not quite ready to divulge every engineering item, but the system is one of the things we are most excited about,” Willits added when asked about the game’s custom weaponry system.

“Through your relationships with characters in the game you earn recipes over time. Then you buy, loot, or receive as rewards the different ingredients that each recipe calls for.”

Rage, id’s first original IP sionce Quake, releases next year via EA.
