Square Enix has an Absolutely Great pack on Amazon
Square Enix didn’t show much imagination in titling this bundle “Absolutely Great” but at $10 for seven PC games plus DLC you can’t fault its logic.

Internal Square magazine hints at final cancellation of Last Remnant PS3
Looky, looky.
It seems that Square Enix has finally put the final death nail into the proverbial coffin of the PS3 port of The Last Remnant.
According to Andriasang, the PS3 port isn’t mentioned in the TBA section of the company’s internal magazine.
We must stress though that this could be a mistake, as the Square site still has the game up for release. Same too for the weekly release calendar from Famitsu, according to AS.
If true, the first true Square game coming to the PS3 would be Final Fantasy XIII in a few weeks, followed up by Star Ocean: The Last Hope.
We’ll drop a mail to Square Enix and see what they say.
The game was first released back in November last year for the Xbox 360, with a PC release earlier this year

Square noncommittal regarding The Last Remnant on PS3

During an investors meeting yesterday, Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada was a bit vague when discussing The Last Remnant finally hitting the PS3.
According to Japanese gaming blog Makonako, Wada never said the game was canceled for the system, but instead, Square is considering the pros and cons of releasing it as the title has not done was well as hoped.
Originally announced as a multiplatform title, The Last Remnant has been out for PC and Xbox 360 for quite some time. Because of this, Square is worried that with the gap between releases being so long, the PS3 port may not be profitable decision in the end.

Last Remnant Steam activation error fixed

The glitch that prevented Last Remnant PC players from being able to activate their games through Steam has been fixed, Eurogamer reports.
While the JRPG’s PC version was released last Friday in Europe, buyers had been told installation was not possible until the game launched on Steam: on April 9.
Still, all’s well that end’s well. Potentially.

Users say The Last Remnant “unplayable” on PC

The PC version of The Last Remnant hit European shores today, and there seems to be a bit of a snafu.
According to reports, the game cannot be played nor installed because of Steam, despite the fact it’s not even suppose to hit the Valve download service until April 9.
The game has to be activated by entering a code off the back of the manual. The activation process is through Steam, which is giving would-be players the following message:
“The Last Remnant has not been officially released, and cannot be unlocked at this time. Please check Steam news to find out the release time. Steam will notify you when the game becomes unlocked.”
Not a good start, especially considering The Last Remnant will be the first ever Square Enix game to land on Steam come next month.
Thanks, Eurogamer.

…and we’re back – Christmas news round up
Happy New Year. We’re glad we shut down over Christmas. You didn’t miss a whole lot.
By far the most important story over the break was news that Free Radical cut its workforce by 140 to just 40.
The developer was confirmed as being in administration just before the Christmas holiday.
Speaking to 1UP, Cameron Gunn of administrators ReSolve Partners said, “We made around 140 employees redundant yesterday, effective 31 December (the date up to which they had been paid). We’re still trading on with the remaining 40 or so employees, have advertised the business for sale and have received some strong interest.”
News broke mid-December that staff had turned up for work only to be locked with a notice on the door telling them to adjourn to a nearby hotel.
Free Radical aside, other noteworthy Christmas news included confirmation that Mistwalker JRPG Cry On has been cancelled.
“AQI decided to cancel the project after analyzing the current market environment and forecasts for the future. We deeply apologize for troubling those who were awaiting its release,” said a company rep.
Cry On was apparently part of “Hironobu Sakaguchi’s triumvirate of Xbox 360 titles,” says this 1UP piece (the other two being Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey), and for those of you who don’t know, the game “was to be an action-RPG featuring a Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack [and] character designs by Kimihiko Fujisaka.”

Last Remnant director: 360′s easier to work with than PS3
Last Remnant director Hiroshi Takai has told OXM – via CVG – that he’s hoping his next project’s a 360 affair. It’s easier to work on than PS3, apparently.
“It’s been the team’s first time working with Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine,” he said.
“In both cases the experience has been a positive one. In fact, as we’ve only just finished work on Last Remnant I don’t even know what my next project is going to be at Square Enix.
“However, I’m very much hoping it’ll be for Xbox 360 as it’s been a lot easier to work with than PlayStation 3.”
The Last Remnant’s already released on 360, with a PC version due in 2009′s first quarter.

Last Remnant PC version confirmed for spring
Square’s confirmed the Windows version of The Last Remnant for spring 2009, as you can see in the press release after the break.
The date’s for all PAL territories.
Apparently the RPG’s “battle system has been carefully crafted to deliver a brand-new experience for gamers”.
The PR doesn’t mention how, unfortunately. Swings and roundabouts.

Play.com goes low on Last Remnant, “shocking” deals planned for next week
Play.com’s selling Square RPG The Last Remnant for £17.99, as you can see here. It’s been out for a week. Despite the fact it didn’t attract the most amazing scores in the world, if you’re in the market for a hardcore 360 JRPG it’d be nonsense not to try it at that price.
Xbox 360 owners may also want to check out Ace Combat 6: Fires Of Liberation for £9.99 on Play – thanks PT.
That’s not all: we’re told that Play is to launch some “shocking” discounting on Monday, with some very high profile games dropping to £18. Keep watching.

First Last Remnant reviews don’t bode well
The first Last Remnant reviews hit overnight, and it’s not looking good. Despite a 38/40 from Famitsu, the game’s now failed to break 7/10 on three major US sites.
We’re going to ask Square for an official comment on Monday as to what’s going on with UK reviews as, well, there aren’t any. The RPG came out on Thursday.
So far:

The Last Remnant launches tomorrow
Just in case you’d forgotten, Square’s put a press release to remind everyone that The Last Remnant’s releasing tomorrow.
Famitsu gave the JRPG a very healthy 38/40, so for 360 owners in the audience this is probably well worth a look.
“Our goal with The Last Remnant was always to make a game that would be welcomed by a global audience,” said producer Nobuyuki Ueda.
“Our fans across Europe have been very supportive towards us, and we wanted to give them the opportunity to play the game at the same time as fans in Japan. We hope they’ll enjoy playing The Last Remnant as much as we have enjoyed making it.”

New Last Remant gameplay videos show battles
Square’s put out two new videos of The Last Remnant’s gameplay, and it seems to be a tactical beast in the combat stakes. The last part of that sentence may not make a huge amount of sense, but the footage shows multiple parties and flanking going on. All too much for us.
Look on CVG.
Game’s out for 360 on November 20 and PS3 next year.
