SOE says cancellation rumors for The Agency are rubbish

SOE president John Smedley has told Joystiq that rumors regarding the cancellation of its PS3/PC MMO action game, The Agency, are pretty much just that – rumors.
“We’re not going to release it until it’s right, said Smedley, “but there’s this rumor going around that we’re going to cancel it — that’s ridiculous.
“We’re going full-bore towards it. We’re simply keeping it under wraps more because we want to make it the best possible game we can. I’m an FPS player first and foremost, so we’re going to get that game right, period.”
He also said that staff departures back in July didn’t halt nor slow development, and estimates that the game will be released “next year”.

SOE’s northwestern outfit is currently working on MMO The Agency.
The posse have launched a new studio called Detonator Games, as confirmed here.
SOE’s assured the game won’t be affected by the moves, saying there’ll be no “reboot”.

Weekly MMO news round-up: Fallen Earth gets screened, CrimeCraft enters beta, Ultima needs testers

Leading up to E3, there is not a megaton of news with anything, let alone MMOs. The week was basically all about screens, delving into crafting systems and character sheets, and general stuff that you can view on any online game’s website. It’s called pre-E3 malaise, and today it’s pretty thick.
However, we have dug through the mire once more to bring you something in the way of MMO news that didn’t hit the front page.
You can catch up on it all after the break.

GDC: DC Universe Online and The Agency pushed to 2010

Oh dear. SOE’s John Smedley’s told a GDC lecture this morning that DC Universe Online will now release in 2010.
The PS3 and PC MMO was originally intended to hit this year.
Worse, SOE’s other big-name MMO, The Agency, has also been pushed back into next year.
Not so great. Thanks, Joystiq.

The Agency won’t be going “outright for $15 a month”
Speaking to Kikizo, Sony Online Entertainment’s Kevin O’Hara’s confirmed that monthly fees are going to play a part in spy shooter MMO The Agency. Free-to-play for the win.
“We’re acutely aware that shooter players are not used to paying monthly fees, so I doubt we’ll go for an outright $15 a month, which works on some of our other projects,” he said.
“So we’re checking out Free Realms to see how they’re going to do with their micro-transactions, and we might incorporate some of that. We’ll definitely have some ad revenue models. The Agency’s the perfect place for some in-game product placement.”
No date on it as yet. Thanks, Massively.

No cross-platform play for The Agency, says SOE
According to this Eurogamer piece, The Agency lead designer Hal Milton has confirmed that the MMO won’t include cross-platform play.
The spy game’s in development at SOE for both PS3 and PC. Milton dropped the bombshell at the company’s annual Fan Faire in Las Vegas.
“A couple of members of our team gained a lot of experience working on Shadowrun, and no matter how well you fine-tune it, you end up with a player-base that’s polarised,” he said.

The Agency gets developer walkthrough videos
After the break. The SOE MMO’s looking very nice indeed, we reckon. Frame rate’s a bit choppy, like, but you can’t have everything. Treat yourselves; it’s Friday.

Cross-platform play unlikely for The Agency, says SOE
According to this, SOE boss John Smedley doesn’t reckon cross-platform play between PC and PS3 gamers is going to happen in spy-shooter MMO The Agency.
“If I was a betting man, I’d bet that we don’t allow it,” he said. “You’ll still be able to log in with your character on either [PS3 or PC].”
He added, “We’re going to start play-testing that soon, but I’ll be honest: I think that our expectations are that we’re going to decide that we won’t have cross-platform play, simply because of the difference in [control schemes].”
The Agency is looking cool enough. There’s not even a tentative release date for the game as yet.
