Nintendo debunks “Wii Want More” DLC press release
A “press release” claiming to announce a Wii download called Wii Want More isn’t exactly kosher, according to Nintendo UK.
“I expect it to be false,” a rep told videogaming247 this morning.
The release – which has caused a storm of controversy on the web in the last few days – claimed that “one of 27 games to make use of the Wii Want More service at its launch will be none other than our very own best selling Super Smash Bros.® Brawl! Starting May 13, 2008, players will be able to add four undisclosed new characters and two new stages to the already large roster included in the stand-alone game for only 10.00 USD.”
The URL of that page doesn’t fit into the same format as the rest of NoA’s press site, and there’s no mention of Wii Want More on the press release section. Which kind of suggests Mr Nintendo UK’s probably right.
So there we are. Phil knows best.

“Pipeline strain” to blame for sketchy online Brawl play in US
Following plenty of complaints of less than reliable server connections in online Super Smash Bros. Brawl games in the US, Nintendo has made a statement saying sheer weight of numbers is putting its system under pressure.
“As with the launch of any online-enabled game, especially one as popular as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, everyone wants to play at once,” said the company. “This puts a strain on the pipeline.”
Nintendo of America confirmed yesterday that the game was the fastest selling in its history, having moved 1.4 million units since it launched on March 9. Buy some bigger servers, Nintendo. Still no date for Europe.

Smash Bros. Brawl is Nintendo America’s fastest selling game ever
Super Smash Bros. Brawl has sold 1.4 million units since its March 9 launch in the US, making it the fastest selling Nintendo of America game of all time.
Selling more than 874,000 on day one, the game has moved more than 120 units per minute since launch. That’s ridiculous. What’s wrong with you people?
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon,” said NoA’s Cammie Dunaway. “Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content.”
Press release after the link. Still no date for Europe.

Secondhand fag smoke may damage Wii lasers
Here. Apparently some of the problems gamers have had running Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the US may have been caused by cigarette smoke clouding Wii’s laser. The Boston Herald offers absolutely no basis for this claim at all, which is nice. We’ll put it under “rumour”.

Boston wins US Brawl tournament
According to this, Boston beat Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York in the first official Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament. There’s a video through the link of people going “woot” and shouting “hell yeah”. There’s footage of the final fight, which saw Ike and Sheik pressing “A” against each other for a long time before one of them one. See for yourself.

Nintendo moves quickly on US Brawl disc errors
According to this, a small but significant number of Super Smash Bros. Brawl purchases are showing disc errors in the US, but Nintendo has moved lightning-strike Pikachu stylt to make everything good.
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity,” said Nintendo. “A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialized cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem.”
If you’re American and having issues, hit that link for a form to fill in and Nintendo will clean your laser for you. There’s service.

Japanese Wii outsells PS3 4-1 in February
Wow. Nintendo sold 331,627 units of Wii in the four weeks to February 24, compared with 89,131 units of PS3, Enterbrain said today, meaning almost four Wii consoles were sold for every PS3.
The January ratio was 3-1, no doubt pushed forward by the stellar success of Brawl and Wii Fit, which sold 1.33 million and 309,311 units in the period respectively.
By contract, Xbox 360 sold 14,079 in the same four weeks.

Brawl for autumn in Europe date “not quite accurate”
As was widely reported yesterday, NOA’s Reggie Fils-Aime said at GDC that Super Smash Bros. Brawl was to release in Europe this autumn, far behind Japan and America. It transpires the source information wasn’t entirely correct.
“While recounting some of the info that I learned from Nintendo of America’s President & COO, Reggie Fils-Aime, I implied that the European release of Super Smash Bros. Melee had been moved to the fall of 2008…that’s not quite accurate, as neither NOE nor Reggie has announced any official release date at this time,” said EGM editor Shane Bettenhausen, here. “Reggie did tell me (and the other media present) that the release had been pushed out of the winter/spring time frame due to the amount of localization required to get the game up and running all the various European languages. But Reggie did not say WHEN Europeans will get Smash Bros., just that it would be at a later date than the U.S.”
There’s more through the link. We still don’t know when the game’s going to be released in Europe.

GDC: Smash Bros. Brawl not released until Autumn in Europe
According to this, Nintendo isn’t planning on releasing big-name Wii fighter Super Smash Bros. Brawl in Europe until the autumn this year. Reggie gave the game away, so to speak, at a breakfast at GDC last week. The news will go down extremely unwell with those looking forward to the game over here, as both Japan and America will have been playing it for months by then. It may do well to remember that we’re going to get Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii earlier than the US, OK?

No voice chat for Smash Bros. Brawl
According to this, Smash Bros. Brawl doesn’t include voice chat for online games. Quite why no one’s pointed this out before is beyond us, see as the title sailed through the million mark in Japan without even blinking.
But anyway. There you go. Apparently there are strict rules about communicating through Wii – presumably as it caters for the younger end of the market – so Nintendo left the feature out altogether.

Kojima having a waz on Smash Bros. Brawl – pics
Here. He’s playing using Solid Snake, obviously, but he looks as though he’s having a nice old time there, bashing away on the game that’s currently taking Japan by storm. Far better, however, is the picture below all that of Kojima with a duck between his legs. Kudos, Hideo.

Brawl sells 700,000 in four days
If this is correct, Wii fighter Super Smash Bros. Brawl has sold more than 700,000 units in its first four days on sale in Japan. The figure is taken from “early sales data from Japanese game site Mantan Web”. No specific figures have been released, but apparently Devil May Cry 4 is second place so far this week.
Brawl is out in March in the US. There’s no European date as yet.
