OnLive pushes towards “winter” launch with massive investment round
Cloud gaming service OnLive’s confirmed closure of a funding round that’s valued the company between $500-750 million, but boss Steve Perlman has hinted a final launch may not come this year.
Exact figures haven’t been disclosed, but, if the valuation is accurate, this is easily the largest games-related investment of its type in 2009.
Speaking to VentureBeat, Perlman said OnLive now has a “winter” release date, with exact timing based on progression of beta testing.
Up to this point, Perlman’s maintained a 2009 date for OnLive.
Despite the highly unsurprising news of a probably slip, Perlman remained in visionary mood.
“Over the last decade, we’ve seen an enormous upheaval in the media business as the written word, photos, music, and video have been steadily moving away from physical media to online delivery,” he said on his blog.
“One major category that still remains largely based on physical discs is fast-response interactive media — in particular, video games. And, of course, OnLive’s goal is to enable that last remaining transition.”

OnLive closed beta begins
OnLive boss Steve Perlman’s confirmed on his blog that the cloud gaming service has now entered closed beta.
“Beta is an AWESOME milestone for OnLive, capping many years of work. We’re really looking forward to hearing what you think,” said the exec.
Of the beta’s goals, Perlman said: “One of the key challenges that OnLive technology addresses is providing a high-quality, fast-response gaming experience over a wide range of situations: different speeds/locations/types of broadband services, a variety of different PC and Mac configurations, several kinds of input and display devices, etc.
“So, a major focus of OnLive Beta is to test as many of these different situations as we can.”
You can still sign up for the beta, if you haven’t done so already. Bear in mind it’s US-only.

OnLive boss says people had “damn well better be skeptical”

OnLive boss Steve Perlman has told Joystiq that people had “damn well better be skeptical” about the Cloud-gaming service, but has insisted in a lengthy interview that the concept works.
“They damn well better be skeptical. When I set out to build this thing, we looked at it and said, ‘Look, in theory it’s possible to do, but in practice we just didn’t know if it could actually be done,’” he said.
Perlman went on to talk about the process behind OnLive’s development, claiming he knew people would question the service when it was announced.
“We knew people were going to be skeptical,” he said. “And they should be, you know? But they would go and say, hmm, we’ve got nine of the top publishers behind this thing; do we really think these guys are gonna take their top titles, commit them for release the same retail window as you know, the titles when they come out for the consoles, and they’re gonna let us show games on the floor here, which are actually just being released the day that the OnLive booth opens, you know?
“The only reason they’re going to do that is, obviously, they’ve gone through tons and tons of testing as well.”
