Blizzard game add-on take-up “well above” 50%, says Pardo
“Well over” half of World of Warcraft, StarCraft and Warcraft III players buy add-ons for the games, Blizzard design boss Rob Pardo has told VG247.
“I don’t know the numbers off the top of my head, but I know that back when you look at Brood War and Frozen Throne, we had well above 50 percent of people that bought the original bought the add-on,” he said, talking as a StarCraft II single-player press day in California last month.
“With WoW, because of the subscription model and the nature of the game, it’s way beyond that.”
Pardo was talking on the subject of expansion sales as StarCraft II will be released in three parts, the first of which, Wings of Liberty, hits next year.

Blizzard soundtrack Echoes of War re-released with discount

Echoes of War, the collection of music from Blizzard games performed by the Eminence Symphony Orchestra, has been reprinted and released with a new limited-time price.
The two-disc collection includes music from Warcraft III, World of Warcraft, Wrath of the Lich King, StarCraft, StarCraft II, Diablo II, Diablo III, and StarCraft: Ghost.
Bonus tracks feature music arranged by Shadow of the Colossus composer, Kow Otani.
A three-disc limited edition is also available and if you pre-order the standard set, you will get a $5 discount.

This is just a friendly reminder, to those planning on attending BlizzCon this year, that tickets go on sale today at 10:00am PST (1:00pm EST).
The event takes place at Anaheim Convention Center in Los Angeles on August 21, and of you haven’t set up a Battle.net account, you need to do so now.

Rumor: China to get StarCraft II beta before May

The three largest Chinese StarCraft II fansites are reporting that a beta for the long-awaited sequel will launch sometime before May.
Each site has apparently been given keys to give away, starting as early as this week.
Each site is officially approved by Blizzard, one site’s community manager claimed during an interview, and the news supposedly came straight from Blizzard’s Representative Office in China.
Now, before you get too excited, remember that we have received no official word from Blizzard on this – so stay calm. Take it as a rumor, or bad translation, until we hear otherwise. We don’t want you to pop an artery for no good reason.

Blizzard contest will hand out awards for best fan fiction

Blizzard’s first ever global writing contest has gone into effect, with the lucky winner getting invited to the company’s headquarters in California.
If you’re feeling creative, write up a piece of fan fiction up to 10,000 words long pertaining to one of Blizzard’s three main franchises, submit it and cross your fingers.
“Whether you conjure stories in your free time or write for a living, you’re encouraged to participate,” says Blizzard.
“This contest is open to entrants from around the world, and will be judged by Blizzard Entertainment’s own writers and masters of lore.”
The winner gets a free trip to the studios, a meeting with Blizzard lore staff, taken to dinner and handed a Frostmourne sword of their very own.
Seven runners-up win packages containing signed copies of novels Diablo Archive, StarCraft Archive, Warcraft Archive, and the Warcraft War of the Ancients Archive.

Warcraft 3 champ signs $500k gaming contract

Professional Warcraft gamer Jae Ho ‘Moon’ Jang has signed a three-year deal with Korean gaming league WeMade FOX worth 700,000,000 won ($473,037).
Previously a member of Warcraft and Starcraft team Meet Your Makers, Moon is please to be playing back home again.
“I am honored to play for a Korea professional gaming team for Koreans. As setting good circumstance of playing, I will give everything to my fans and FOX team by winning lots of titles in 2009,” he said.
This deal makes the 22-year-old the highest-paid professional Warcraft III player and the second highest paid e-Sports player in Korea.

AT&T and Blizzard renew hosting vows

AT&T has renewed its contract to host Blizzard’s online titles – including Diablo II, StarCraft and World of Warcraft – for the next two years.
The company’s hosted WoW and the Battle.net service for Blizzard for the past nine years.
“We’ve been pleased with AT&T’s service over the years, and we’re confident in their ability to continue to provide the quality support we need,” said Blizzard COO Paul Sams.
“This renewed agreement allows us to stay completely focused on our games while AT&T applies its hosting expertise to help us offer the speed, reliability and security our players expect.”
