Alice: Otherlands creator American McGee has announced that Hong Kong writer, director and producer Tsui Hark has signed up to assist production of Spicy Horse’s series of Alice animated shorts, funding now on Kickstarter.

American McGee has confirmed to VG247 that negotiations for the Alice: Otherlands film rights are done, and that all Spicy Horse has to do now is raise the funds to buy them via Kickstarter. It the studio misses its window to buy the rights to make animated shorts based on the IP, the license will go back on sale.

OZombie developer Spicy Horse has cancelled the game’s failing Kickstarter campaign. In the project’s final update, studio founder American McGee re-iterated his desire to secure the film rights to his Alice series of games.

OZombie developer Spicy Horse would like to secure the film rights to American McGee’s vision of Alice in order to produce a series of short animations or even a feature film based on Otherlands, the studio’s other major potential project. To further this aim, Spicy Horse has announced it will use some of its OZombie Kickstarter funds to seal a deal, because “doing so will increase awareness about OZombie and put us in a position to secure and develop the Alice property as animated shorts and eventually feature film”. In other words: Alice fans pay (or rather, help pay) for OZombie, OZombie earns enough to pay for Alice.

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters has met its Kickstarter goal of $200,000, netting a further $4,680 in a last minute surge which sent it over the finish line. Hopefully, Spicy Horse will now be able to add the additional features and polishing it asked backers to help fund. Akaneiro was complete prior to the Kickstarter’s launch and is available now after an open beta test. The action RPG is free-to-play and cross-platform.

American McGeee has posted an apology on his blog, after stating on Reddit that EA had ‘tricked’ the public into thinking the Spicy Horse game Alice: Madness Returns was a hardcore horror game. McGee has now retracted the statement and apologised to EA.

Akaneiro will remain in open beta until January 22, Spicy Horse has informed us. The developer hopes to continue tweaking the RPG’s gameplay in response to feedback, as its Kickstarter and Greenlight campaigns are likely to bring in waves of new testers. Akaneiro is a free-to-play and cross-platform Diabloesque inspired by Japanese myths and Red Riding Hood; sign up and have a go.
