Sega’s blue wonder Sonic the Hedgehog turns 20 today. The first Sonic game released on June 23 in North America and Europe on Mega Drive 20 years ago. Anniversary celebrations have already consisted of the release of an iOS app that catches you up on Sonic-related happenings, as well as a demo of Sonic Generations on PSN later today and other Sonic-related deals for the PS Store. There’s also a packshot of the game below. We’ve posted the PS3 version, but the 360 version looks the same, sans the logos, etc.

Sega: Sonic quality will “be fixed over time”

sonica

Sega reckons Sonic the Hedgehog is on the up. All you’ve got to do is wait for the little blue man’s return to the glory days.

“The quality is something that will be fixed over time,” SoA marketing man Sean Ratcliffe told IndustryGamers.

“It’s not something where you wake up one morning and say, ‘You know what, we’re going to improve our quality on this franchise,’ and it magically happens. A lot of hard work goes into striving for quality.”

Phew. We’d almost given up hope. Loads more through there.

Sonic UK’s favourite videogame character

sonic.jpg

Sega has popped its head round the door to tell us that Sonic the Hedgehog is the UK’s all time favourite videogame character of all time.

“Over 500 UK gamers voted in the poll to mark the launch of London Games Festival, which is expected to attract over 100,000 computer games fans to the capital this week,” says the release.

Top Ten is as follows:

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog
  2. Super Mario
  3. Lara Croft
  4. Donkey Kong
  5. Pac Man (10 per cent)
  6. Link
  7. Max Payne
  8. Pikachu
  9. Niko Belic
  10. Blanka

Marcu Fenix or some other manly, muscular character should have won in our opinion. Anyway, congrats to Sonic and Sega.

Happy birthday, Sonic. Here’s to another 17 years of running in a straight line.
