Come January 28, 2014, the SOCOM series will essentially be over as Sony will be shutting down online functionality for Slant Six’s SOCOM Confrontation and Zipper’s SOCOM 4, both of which were PS3 games and the last of the series to have servers running. Furthermore, Zipper’s MAG, the online FPS that supported 256-player battles, is also going offline that day. Of those three games, SOCOM 4 is the only one with any sort of offline play. Zipper Interactive was closed by Sony last year after they finished their Vita shooter Unit 13, and Slant Six, an independent studio, is in flux since they launched Operaction Raccoon City. RIP.

According to a Sony Europe PSN release schedule obtained by videogaming247.com, SOCOM Confrontation will be available to download from PlayStation Network on the 5th of February.
The much sort after shooter slipped to “early 2009” back in November.
No price is forthcoming at this time.
We can only assume that a boxed version of the game will be released within the same time period.

We will be performing server maintenance and rolling out a new patch on September 9th at 5am PDT, 1200 GMT. The SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation game servers will be unavailable during the maintenance. The server maintenance is not expected to last longer than 1 1/2 hours.
SOCOM: Confrontation Public Beta 1.10 Patch
- Adds support for European EULAs.
- Adds support for dedicated servers located in Europe and Australia.
- Addresses a number of stability and late joining issues.
- Reduce the volume of the proximity chat by 50%.
The server maintenance and patch are not meant to address all issues. We will have more updates to both the server and client in the future.
This is what betas are about, chaps. Watch for the patch later today.

Speaking in this official blog post, SCEA’s Seth Luisi has apologised to load issues to to high demand for the SOCOM beta, saying everything should be fixed by the end of next week.
“Due to overwhelming demand for the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Public Beta, we are experiencing load related issues,” he said.
“These issues are causing abnormal latency, disconnects, long load times, login errors and community features such as clans and stats not functioning correctly (or at all).
“We are doing everything we can to resolve these issues as quickly as possible and you should see some improvements progressively over the next couple of days. However, we do not expect to have the issues completely resolved until close to the end of next week.
“We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Shooting people for free is clearly the new black. Game’s out on September 16.

Demand for Eurogamer’s UK SOCOM: Confrontation beta key giveaway was furious today, with the site buckling under pressure but delivering its 6,000 keys in 1 hour 17 minutes.
The site’s recovered now, but if you were thinking of hopping on to the beta and weren’t prepared for the F5 madness, tough luck.
The beta itself starts today, so if you were lucky enough to get a key you can use it instantly.
If you don’t live in the UK but you’re in other PAL territories, hit this for more info from SCEE.

According to this US PS Blog post, the PS3 Bluetooth headset will be released in the US this “fall” with the SOCOM: Confrontation bundle ($59.99) and as a standalone peripheral ($49.99).
There’s loads more info through there, should you be American and in the market for a Bluetooth headset for your PS3.
Still waiting for European details, but it’s fairly safe to assume it’s coming out with SOCOM later this month.

Army of Two? Hah! Try Army of Two Plus One. According to Joystiq, you need only pre-order a single copy of SOCOM: Confrontation from Gamestop to pocket three beta keys.
Of course, if you plan to download the game from PSN, a quick (read: year-long) Qore subscription will also yield a beta key – but only one. And frankly, a $5 pre-order is cheaper, and fully retractable.
So, which route will you be taking?

Eurogamer’s put up a no-show on a European SOCOM date from Sony, with a rep saying, “We have yet to announce a release date and price for SOCOM in the UK.”
SCEA confirmed earlier this week that SOCOM Confrontation, the next game in the firm’s popular tactical shooter series, will hit the US on October 14 and will cost $39.99 both at retail and on PSN.
