Epic Games vice-president Mark Rein has commented on the state of second-screen play found on Wii U and Xbox SmartGlass. He reckons the method’s killer app will come eventually, but it’s not quite there yet.

Following the Windows Phone release earlier today, Xbox One’s SmartGlass app is now available for Android and iOS. Grab the free app from iTunes or Google Play. The app allows you to control your console remotely and adds second screen functions including extra content in selected movies and games. Xbox One hits on November 22, in North America and West Europe.

Unity Technologies announced today during Build Conference in San Francisco that it has added Xbox One support for Kinect, SmartGlass support to its development tools and has also extended its commitment to Windows 8 the W8 Phone. The Xbox One version of the game engine will also feature cloud computing support, and developers being published by Microsoft Studios will be able to use Unity free. The firm will release the commercial version of its Store Add-on for Windows later this summer, and it will also be waiving the $1,500 license fee for licensed Unity Pro 4 developers as part of its Microsoft deal. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge will support Microsoft’s SmartGlass application when it launches on Xbox 360. This will allow users to pull up statistical information on their phones or tablet, and will sync to YouTube allowing users to browse video walkthroughs and tutorials. The second seasons of both Kinect Sesame Street TV and Kinect Nat Geo TV are available now on the US side of Xbox Live. The interactive TV shows are available as individual episodes for 400 MS Points or in full seasons for 2400 MS Points. Kinect Sesame Street TV has been enhanced with SmartGlass functionality this season, so you can create playlists of your favourite moments.

Peter Molyneux may have just launched Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube? on smartphone and tablets this week, but he’s not convinced by the way tablet devices are being used by Wii U and via Xbox SmartGlass. He reckons it’s a case of tech guys running wild with ideas without thinking of the logistics.

FIFA 13 on Wii U will come with a host of GamePad features that could just as easily transfer over to Xbox SmartGlass, and as it happens, EA is currently having a chat over the matter.

According to VentureBeat, Xbox executive Don Mattrick mentioned during a GamesBeat panel that Halo 4 “will work with” Microsoft’s recently-revealed tablet, Surface. No details were given but the platform holder has said that all first-party games will include SmartGlass functionality so you can probably expect something of that ilk. Halo 4 is due exclusively on Xbox 360 in November.
