Infinity Ward’s opening up multiplayer for Modern Warfare 3 on Steam for this weekend only. Beginning from 6pm GMT (10am PST) tonight until Monday, you can play the entire suite for free. The period is available to pre-load from Steam right now.

Activision has released a new video with glimpses of the Overwatch map which releases on Xbox 360 February 21 for Elite premium subscribers. After the exclusivity period on 360 ends, it will be released for PC and PS3. Overwatch takes place in a construction site atop a New York City skyscraper, and includes two levels “in a near symmetrical layout,” with the central bridge and side routes open to attack from multiple angles. Infinity Ward has released a new update for Modern Warfare 3, promising to fix lag, balancing several weapons and more. IW community manager Rob Bowling, fresh from escaping a teabagging at the VGAs over the weekend, also promised the latest update would help prevent stat loss when a particular player loses connection from a match.

Kotaku reports leaked screenshots turned up over the weekend of the first batch of DLC for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The now-deleted screens were accompanied by rumours that the five maps contained therein would be called Morning Wood, Concrete, Park, Italy and Overwatch. Interestingly, Overwatch is the title of a map included in Modern Warfare 2.

Activision has indicated Modern Warfare 3 will receive 20 DLC packs; Call of Duty Elite premium members receive all DLC ahead of its general release.

Activision’s put out a notice correcting its initial figure of 3.3 million simultaneous users on multiplayer for launch day of Modern Warfare 3. The number now, according to the publisher, 1.4 million users. Acti reported last week 3.3 million users logged onto Xbox Live day one to play the shooter.

Modern Warfare 3′s been able to keep atop of the UK charts for a second straight week, despite a sales decrease and a strong challenge from new entry Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

According to a 14 page forum thread on Xbox.com (via G4), copies of Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360 have been receiving disc read errors. Users who have a faulty discs claim that either the game isn’t read from the console or it does boot up only to crash soon after. One user claims that Microsoft and Activision are “well aware of the problem and are trying to fix it and might release an update for this later,” according to a conversation they had with an Xbox support rep.

We don’t want to emphasise that dynamic so much that the other people in that engagement aren’t having fun. We have less verticality in our maps, there are less camping points.
