Activision has announced Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure was the number one, best-selling console and handheld video game title between January and April 30, 2012 worldwide based on revenue inclusive of toys and accessories, according to NPD Group, GfK, Charttrack and Activision internal estimates. The game was released in October.

Some Gamestop outlets are reportedly accepting trade-ins on used Skylanders toys.

Activision has announced Skylanders Giants, a follow-up to the kids’ IP Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure, which will debut at the North American International Toy Fair next week in New York.

Activision’s launched two new characters for Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, as well as a new content pack called Empire of Ice. The new characters introduced are Cynder and Double Trouble. Cynder is a a dragon of the undead element whose “dark powers flow through her due to her difficult past,” although is said to be making amends. Double Trouble was previously a adept spellcaster, but now comes from the magic element. Another character coming is Slam Bam, a “yeti-abominable-snowman-looking guy,” who has yeti fists and ice prison attacks.

Activision’s lifted the veil on Skylanders: Spyro’s Universe, an MMO version of Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. The title will introduce Skylands players are able to customise, a way to introduce physical figures from Spyro’s Adventure into the world and mini-games that totally aren’t Angry Birds.
