scribblenauts

Speaking with ONM, 5th Cell’s Marius Fahlbusch has hinted that it would be “interesting” to see the developer do a Wii version of Scribblenauts.

It certainly would be interesting to do the game for Wii,” said Fahlbusch.

We’re always looking to do something new something that hasn’t been done before. We’re going to continue on that path.”

Scribblenauts development time revealed

scribblenauts

5th Cell’s creative director Jeremiah Slaczka has revealed in an interview with Gama that Scribblenauts was in development for over a year.

One year and three months, to be exact.

“[We worked on Scribblenauts for] a year and three months, which is crazy. That’s probably the only thing I don’t like about 5th Cell’s development. It’s just how it is. That’s the way it is. We’re competing against companies like Square Enix and Nintendo, triple-A products,” revealed Slaczka.

“People hold us to the same standard, which I’m totally fine with — I want them to hold us to that standard. But they get three years, and I get one year. That’s the big difference. I feel like a boxer with one hand tied between my back.”

5th Cell says original name for Scribblenauts was “Wordplay”

scribblenauts

Scribblenauts wasn’t always called Scribblenauts, according to creative director Jeremiah Slaczka.

Originally, it was called “Wordplay”.

“We had a lot of different names before Scribblenauts,” said Slaczka. “The original name was Wordplay, which is really lame and not fun and very generic…We’ve always gone through a lot of names before we kinda settle on a final name…

“Scribblenauts was also actually a temp name, which is kind of funny that it actually stuck. Because in the beginning, we were just like, well we need something, we always need something for a pitch and what’s the project name. So we were like, ‘Well, this is quirky and interesting, but maybe not completely what we want to go for.’

“But it just stuck. It made sense. And it wasn’t generic at all.”

Warner hopes Scribblenauts has same appeal as Layton games

scribblenauts

The marketing manager for Warner Bros., Phil Lamb, has said that due to the popularity of titles like Professor Layton, Scribblenauts should appeal to casual, female, and “grey” gamers.

Because of this, Warner expects the title to become a new franchise for the DS market.

“The stylized look of Scribblenauts offers something fresh and friendly that doesn’t appear intimidating,” Lamb told MCV. “That combined with the addictive gameplay means that it will definitely strike a chord with casual, female and maybe even ‘grey’ gamers.

“What Scribblenauts offers is something akin to Nintendo’s Professor Layton – an addictive and challenging game that has real mass-market appeal all wrapped up in a uniquely stylized package.

“We fully expect this title to be the start of a brand new franchise in the DS puzzle market.”

Pfft – 22,802 words? Scribblenauts has more than that

scribblenauts

Over the weekend, an enterprising hacker claimed to have used his evil techno-wizardry to extract Scribblenauts’ 22,802-piece soul, which he then put on display for the entire Internet to see. However, speaking with Fast Company, lead designer Jeremiah Slaczka had a few choice words for said hacker:

“That [number] was leaked by a hacker who does not know anything. It’s more than that,” he explained.

Sorry, our vocabulary is currently cowering in a corner. We’ll get back to that whole “speaking properly” thing as soon as we manage to console it.
