Interview: Blizzard’s Chris Metzen on the WoW movie, Heart of the Swarm, more

chrismetzen

It’s late in the afternoon and it’s fitting to find the developer known as the Bourbon Cowboy – Chris Metzen – on horseback. Admittedly, it’s a virtual steed; we’ve just walked in on him playing World of Warcraft in his office at Blizzard’s Irvine, CA headquarters. It turns out even the mind behind some of the most distinctive (and lucrative) worlds known in gaming – StarCraft, Warcraft and Diablo – is an achievement junkie, with Metzen trying to nail in-game exploration accolades “between meetings”.

Or at least that’s his story.

WoW movie being penned by Private Ryan writer

lichking

MTV’s scooped the writer of the World of Warcraft movie: it’s Robert Rodat, the screenwriter behind Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot.

The info comes from a quote from Sam Raimi, zombie-turned-fantasy super-director:

“We want to be really faithful to the game…to the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents. I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible.

“But we would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a ‘World of WarCraft’ adventure. Only obviously it’s very different ’cause it’s expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.”

Baddaboom. The movie’s out in 2011.

WoW movie gets “Rise of the Lich King” sub-head

wowwrathofthelichking3

The IMDB page for the upcoming World of Warcraft movie’s been updated: apparently, the Sam Raimi movie’s going to be called Warcraft: The Rise of the Lich King.

As MTV points out, the interesting bit’s the fact that a World of Warcraft novel, Arthas: Rise of the Lich King, was released in the US earlier this year.

The book follows Arthas Menethil, a once-noble prince who goes mental and becomes the Lich King.

Vrai ou faux? We’ll all know soon enough. The movie’s out in 2011.

“You could make a brilliant World of Warcraft movie,” says Spider-Man director

According to MTV, Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has said that a World of Warcraft is an excellent choice for yet another film based around videogames.

“There’s World of Warcraft — what an awesome video game!” he said. “It has such great, adventurous characters in it and such fantastic landscapes and rules… You could make a brilliant World of Warcraft movie — as fine as any of the best superhero movies — if you had the right writers and directors.”

You could make anything great if you had that right people working on it, we reckon.
