Feature: Is there a way forward for RTS?

RTS is doomed, if you listen to the naysayers. We sincerely hoped it wasn’t, so we asked EndWar dev lead and Ubisoft Montpellier creative director Michael de Plater, RUSE developer Eugen and British starlet Creative Assembly what problems are facing real-time strategy and whether or not the genre can move passed them.

RUSE beta starts on November 30
Ubi said today that a “VIP beta” for WWII RTS RUSE will begin on November 30.
The taster will include two factions – Germany and America – at the start, but will be updated to allow play with USSR, France, Italy and UK as the beta progresses.
It’s a Steam-only thing, and “a limited number of codes are being distributed on different partner websites worldwide.”
There’s a PR after the break. The full game’s out in the first quarter.

Uplay launches with Assassin’s Creed II
Ubisoft’s launched Uplay, a publisher-specific rewards program, alongside Assassin’s Creed II.
If you’ve been playing the game – it’s awesome: you should – you may have noticed the occassional “U” popping up as you going about your shit. It’s a system similar to Achievements and Trophies; you get points to spend in-game on weapons, skins, and so on, for completing “Actions”.
Check out all the available Actions and rewards here.
Only Assassin’s Creed II, Splinter Cell Conviction, and RUSE are compatible right now, and you don’t appear to be able to link your Gamertag or PSN ID with your Ubi profile, but it’s the thought that counts.
Take a look.

Ubisoft shows RUSE on Microsoft Surface touch-screen

Microsoft Surface was on display at E3, and Ubisoft’s Scott Cushing demonstrated RUSE on the touch screen tabletop to BBC.
The multiplayer WWII strategy game came to life on the interactive surface, and Cushing showed how closely the 30-inch diagonal display could zoom in on terrain and ground troops and how easy it was to pick different quadrants for strategic maneuvering.
It’s really awesome, to be honest.
Video is after the break.
Thanks, G1GAHURTZ.

Ubi’s R.U.S.E. compatible with Microsoft Surface

Ubisoft strategy title R.U.S.E. will work with Microsoft’s £8500 touch-table, Surface, Eurogamer reports.
Microsoft Surface is designed so that businesses and other important rich institutions can manage all their media files and documents whilst sitting down on what we would imagine to be incredibly comfortable chairs.
The trick is, you whack down your Zune, PDA, iPhone or whatever, and all the data, images, calender entries you have stored automatically get transferred into the table enabling you to move them around, change their size, and file them with your fingertips. Neat, huh?
Until now, games have never been mentioned as a potential feature. We’re getting three each.

RUSE trailered at Ubisoft’s E3 event

RUSE trailer was shown during the Ubisoft presser at E3.
Apparently the WWII RTS allows two people staring at each other to play with their fingers, pointing ships in the direction they should go. Telling tanks where to fire.
All atop what seems to be one of those minority report tables.
It’s out for PC, 360 and PS3 later this year,
When the trailer is released we will post it to avoid any confusion.
