Quick Quotes: Characters being “too tough, and too snarky” can inhibit storytelling, says Lemarchand
“As game creators, we put up too much front in our creations and we don’t make ourselves nearly vulnerable enough. I think our audience senses this, and they emotionally withdraw from our games. I’m not calling for us to get soppy and overwrought. We human beings are also fascinated and impressed by nuance and restraint. We have to get in better touch with our emotions and become more adept at portraying them in detail… with restraint, clarity and above all, vulnerability. I think that we owe it to our audience of players to really dig deep, and tell some stories worth playing.” – Naughty Dog’s Richard Lemarchand at an NYU lecture attended by Gamasutra.

Naughty Dog using “30-40%” of PS3′s power
In this ThreeSpeech interview, Naughty Dog’s Richard Lemarchand has said the Uncharted developer’s currently working with less that half PS3′s available grunt.
“We think we’re probably only using 30 or 40 percent of the power of the PS3 right now, and there’s this great, untapped potential,” he said.
“All third-party developers can get the Edge libraries for free and are going to be able to use them in their own ways, to get more and more and more out of the PS3 over the years.”
Edge is a system of tools developed by elite members of the Naughty Dog coding Mafia.
“There’s a set of tools called Edge that were developed on the Naughty Dog premises, actually, by a group of very, very senior games programmer, some from Naughty Dog and some from elsewhere,” Lemarchand added. “I think it’s tremendously visionary of Sony to make these tools, which are largely low-level libraries.”
