Guillemot: Splinter Cell and Red Steel delayed for “additional polishing time”

splintercelconvictiona51

If you thought there was some big conspiracy behind the recently announced delays of Splinter Cell: Conviction and Red Steel 2, prepare to be disappointed. Turns out, Ubisoft just thought the two games could use a bit more time in the powder room.

“The changes on Splinter Cell and Red Steel – it’s just a question of polish. The team was asking that they couldn’t be with the level of quality on all the maps and all the game for the end of the year, so they had asked for more time to be able to come with a better product, for both of those games,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said during a recent earnings call.

The quality of the games is there for what you’ve been able to see at E3, but we were not able to have that same quality on the full game of those two products,” he added.

He also revealed that, by missing the chance to stuff gamers’ stockings this holiday season, Splinter Cell and Red Steel will probably sell “around a million units” fewer in their respective first months. Madness? Not quite. “We really think with the level of quality that we’ll be able to obtain with the time we give them we will have a long shelf life for those products,” he explained.

Thanks, Joystiq.

Ubisoft delays Splinter Cell: Conviction and Red Steel 2 until 2010

splintercellconviction62

Ubisoft’s announced it’s delaying Splinter Cell: Conviction and Red Steel 2 until Q4 2009, which normally tends to mean January – March 2010. The news comes from Ubi’s Q1 2009 financial report.

Q1 is suddenly the new Q4.

As well as them two, Ghost Recon 4 and I Am Alive have been delayed until fiscal 2010 – 2011, which means both games wont be released until April 2010 at the very latest.

“We are disappointed that we have to postpone the release of several major games but we consider that this choice is the best one in the long-term interests of Ubisoft,” said the company in a statement.

“Lastly, we are having to adjust our full-year targets to take into account the fall in business over the first half. The excellent response to our games at E3, as well as the high buzz generated for titles such as Assassin’s Creed 2, Splinter Cell Conviction and Avatar, reinforce our belief that the company can achieve strong growth in the second half of the fiscal year.”

Red Steel 2 wouldn’t work on other platforms, says Ubi

redsteel22

There’s no chance of Red Steel 2 appearing on any other console that Wii, creative director Jason Vandenberghe has said in this fan Q&A.

“Red Steel 2 is Wii exclusive, and Wii MotionPlus exclusive,” said the developer.

“The core gameplay of intense, 1st-person swordplay simply doesn’t function the way we want it to without the Wii Remote.”

When asked if the intention was to create a franchise as big as Rayman or Assassin’s Creed in red Steel, Vandenberghe added, “I would love nothing more than if everyone with a Wii bought and played our game, and then went out and convinced all their friends who didn’t have Wiis yet to buy one and do the same thing.”

It’s out later this year.

Red Steel 2 to be bundled with WMP, per Ubisoft press event

redsteel2

A Red Steel 2 trailer was shown at Ubisoft’s E3 presser.

It showed a desert, a swordsman controlled by the player surrounded by enemies. Swordsman pulls out a gun, hits baddie with sword and shoots him while he was down.

That’s the dual-wielding weapons thing the devs have been talking about. The harder you swing the sword, the harder you hit.

It’s also bloodless, but brutal. You can knock enemies into the air, follow him into the sky, and back down.

In the demo shown, a guy was pulled by a motorcycle, almost hit by an 18-wheeler, escaped before an explosion, and he’s up and ready to fight.

Game runs at 60 frames per second and will be bundled with MotionPlus at launch.

MotionPlus-only Red Steel 2 is “huge risk,” says Ubi

redsteel23

Red Steel only works with Wii MotionPlus. This may or may not be a particularly clever idea.

“It’s a huge risk,” creative director Jason Vandenberghe said in the latest Nintendo Power.

“We have no idea what the penetration rate for Wii MotionPlus will be. We assume high. We would like it to be high.”

Not using the peripheral wasn’t an option, Vandenberghe added.

“I would love to say to you that it’ll be compatible with just a regular controller, but the gameplay simply isn’t there without MotionPlus,” he added.

“That core experience just isn’t there without it.”

The game releases this Christmas. MotionPlus launches in June.

Ubisoft responds to leaked Red Steel 2 trailer – sort of

redsteel2

Looks as though the Red Steel 2 trailer released yesterday was not intended for public viewing, but was supposed to be an “internal only” release.

Ubisoft said that the pre-production trailer was never intended for a general release and refused further comment on it – or the mention of Destination PlayStation at the end of it – when probed by CVG.

The game was originally thought to be a Wii exclusive until the trailer caused some confusion.

Again, come on E3. We can’t say it enough.

Red Steel 2 details surface, lacks multiplayer

redsteel2

Red Steel 2 details have surfaced, and there’s loads more to it than just making use of of Wii MotionPlus.

For starters, multiplayer is not included in the game. Ubisoft said that this has more to do with the developer’s focus on the single-player and hacking each other to death with swords. It does, however, think that mutliplayer through DLC would be a great idea.

“We would love to create a multiplayer engine, but not right now”, it said. “It’s single player because we want to really focus on the core mechanic and as much as we all want to kill each other with swords, it’s not going to happen this time.

“[Multiplayer] would be cool. The world has changed, and we can do that sort of thing. I certainly think that would be cool. I’d buy it. But we need to be careful bringing out something that people think should be in the main game.”

GoNintendo jotted down the other features included in the game into a nice list for you.

It’s after the break.

Wii exclusive Red Steel 2 confirmed for the holidays

redsteel22

Ubisoft has announced that Red Steel 2 will hit Wii exclusively for the holiday season, and was built from the ground up to use MotionPlus.

Set in a desert-bound metropolis, sword and gun play will be replicated on-screen using WMP. The stronger the swing, the larger the impact.

“Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console,” said Ubisoft’s John Parkes.

“Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration.”

The game’s on the cover of the magazine, which claims, “Finally, wielding a sword in a Wii game feels as real as you’d always dreamed.”

You don’t want to know about the sword dreams we have. They’re horrible.

“Other” Red Steel 2 shown in concepts

redsteel22

Screens of an abandoned Red Steel 2 version have popped up here.

Ubisoft Montreuil worked on the game in 2007: the shots are from the east Paris outfit’s efforts.

Development ended in Montreuil in October of that year when Ubisoft handed it over to the central Paris division.

The action sequel’s expected to arrive sometime this year for Wii.

Ubisoft confirms Red Steel 2, will use Wii MotionPlus

According to this GI report, Ubisoft’s confirmed that Wii MotionPlus will be used in sword-fighting sequel Red Steel 2.

“Red Steel 2 has been in development for many months now, and this new device will help us be even more precise in what we do with the product,” said company director Alain Corre.

The new Wii motion add-on was shown for the first time at E3 this year, and Corre believes the Red Steel brand will benefit from the tech boost.

“The Red Steel brand is strong – I think we released it on year one, and that people understood that it was a first try on new technology, technology that wasn’t completely finished. And our game tried to grab the best out of it, and was a bit rushed to be sure to offer something in year one to Wii consumers,” he added.

“So Red Steel is a brand, and as with every brand we have, we now have to reach the top quality possible. What was missing was the preciseness of the sabre – and with this new device I think it will change the experience.”
