Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad is by the guy who said that Call of Duty is ruining a generation of shooter players. If you’ve been raised on a diet of Activision’s offerings, you may not want to participate in the free Steam weekend for Red Orchestra 2, actually, because it’s unrelentingly unforgiving; hugely focused on realism and teamwork; and has a learning curve so steep you’ll probably tip over backwards a few times on the way up – as opposed to Call of Duty’s fun-from-the-get-go approach. However, if you master it, you can proudly call yourself a skilled gamer indeed, so get out there, kids, and remember to keep your head d- oh, never mind, you’ve got another one. If you like what you see, it’s on sale for $3, which is shamefully cheap.

Tripwire Interactive has released a teaser video for the Rising Storm expansion to Red Orchestra 2 showcasing the Iwo Jima level. This map features the beaches and tunnels of as well as Mt. Suribachi and other small hints at features coming in Rising Storm. The music you’ll hear in the video, as well as in the game, was composed by Ben Hollway, who previously worked in a research capacity for HBO’s The Pacific, and Band of Brothers and as a Pacific theatre researcher for the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty franchises. Steam has opened pre-loading for tomorrow’s release of Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad.

Those who order before the game unlocks in 15 hours’ time will save ten percent on the cover price. The standard edition goes for $39.99 undiscounted.

The PC-exclusive shooter is the sequel to the notoriously hardcore Ostfront 41-45. The series boasts a more realistic depiction of World War II-era warfare, and calls for patience, tactical thinking, and communicative team work.

Tripwire has released the first multiplayer gameplay trailer for Red Orchestra 2. Hitting around the 2 minute mark, it features in-game footage shot in an online MP game during beta testing last week.
